Freitas is a weakling at heart. Fun as hell to watch fight though. Unforunately, most people are going to remember him for quitting to Corrales instead of his fight of the year candidate against Barrios in 2003.
Acelino Freitas Retires.

Freitas to me looks like a guy that does not enjoy the sweet science like other fighters do.
Freitas never looked the same after about the 5th round of his bout with Casamayor. He has gone froom puncher to boxer puncher from about that round on in his career, he may have had another thrilling fight at some point but his retirement doesnt shock me or upset me.Comment

I don't want anybody to take this the wrong way, but
GO **** YOURSELVES
Seriously, the guy grew up dirt poor, rose to stardom, made millions, became an inspiration to other Brazilians, is 30 years old, lives a great life in Brazil with some of the most beautiful women around him, why care if he retires while still in good health?...
I have to admit, I was shocked and a bit pissed at first, kind of still am, but WTF, oh well, good for him.
He lost the hunger...I am sure he is getting enough good pie in Brazil that fills his ego.
It's a lot easier to call a guy a "Quitter" than to have to go through it yourself
The problem with most of the "boxing fans" is that they love seeing a guy at his peak, but they also have that need to see someone fall to the bottom also, why? because they are in awe of the "greatness", but because of that awe/greatness, since they don't have it themselves, they want the person to fall.Last edited by Abe Attell; 10-04-2006, 08:52 PM.Comment

For some of you people to talk about how "he has a weak heart" the man didint even have a bed until he was what, 18/19? Some of you take your keyboard blabbering too far. He was getting his ass kicked and didint want anymore, so he has a weak heart? Please.Comment

I agree. He got knocked down a bunch of times and got up. He just felt out of the fight and had enough, he was exhausted and done. Sure he could have dug down deep but o well. The guy is from the slums of Brazil, which make the ******s in America look like luxuries. He went threw tons in his life and to say he has no heart is bull****. Barrios knocked him down and he came back and KO'd Barrios. That shows heart too. He quit in one fight, o well. Freitas was a great fighter and a Brazilian legeng. I wish him the best of luck in his life after boxing.Comment

Don't give me all that sob story bull****, guys. We're criticizing him as a boxer, not as a human being. In boxing if you give up, you're a quitter. Take your sob stories to the girls.Comment

yes, until somebody dies, then they blame the ref or the guys trainer for not stopping it...Did you see the shots and how badly Freitas fell from those shots?
The last shot that put him down for the final time was a shot right or near the ear/temple...shots like those, people tend not to be able to recover from.
He shouldn't have had to call it off, his trainer should of stepped in...there have been fighters in the past that have just stayed down, ex: Arguello.Comment

Forgive me for not being shocked. Freitas really lost his desire after the Corrales fight, being pushed to quit in a fight asks alot of questions of a man, and the backlash and emotional trauma of his decision really took it out of him. Most fighters who quit, like Camacho Jr. and Duran, come back to boxing for money. Freitas, who is a national icon in Brazil, doesn't experience the same financial strain of those guys because he has invested his money wisely. I wish him luck in his after boxing life.Comment
