It doesn't matter that the majority of people though Toney was robbed because of the majority of people on this site like Toney.
I find it interesting that a lot of former boxers on forums thought Peter won through imposing his strength and will on Toney and landing the more effective punches. Toney landed clean but those punches did nothing to halt Peter's momentum. Peter was the one forcing Toney back with every jab he landed. That's how you win rounds, not cute little shoulders rolls and counterpunches that have no effect on the opponenet. The difference between an Archie Moore or Joe Walcott and Toney is that the old guys could actually hurt and knock down their opponent with their counters. Toney is the least effective puncher at heavyweight I've ever seen. Even Chris Byrd could hurt a guy to the body as he proved vs. David Tua.
Wow, an objective opinion on this fight. The agresser should win rounds the one pulling off stunts should lose them. Thats the nature of the scoring system. Was this decision a tragedy? I watched the fight twice. The firs time I thought maybe Toney pulled it off. Maybe. After seeing it a second time, There is no question That Peter did the most damage. This is wasn't a robbery. It's good that fans of James Toney rally behind there man. But cmmon look at it again. Closely from an objective point of view.
and on the not of Toney's punching power at heavyweight. I can't remember seeing anybody in that division that lacked soo much in the punching power area of his fight game. I always have thought that Toney moving up to heavy weight was a bad idea. That he was getting to lazy to make weight for the Light heavyweight division. I mean why else would you want to move up if there are so many big money fights at light heavy. "oops cuz he cant hang with that croud, my bad"
To Toney's fans I appologize for your mislead faith. and to James Toney SHUT THE HELL UP!

Well, that includes me too.
Kingdosia makes a rational response! Toney hit Peter with his Sunday punch several times and Peter just ignoreed it.

I agree. it was a very close fight but peter won all the close rounds with his more damaging blows. its the nuthuggers that think toney won by a landslide. I do agree with them on one point,,, that the 2 judges having peter up by 5 points was ridiculous. I had peter up by one and he got the decision. the toney groupies need to get over this grow up and move on
i'm one of the biggest toney fans on here. the first time i scored the fight i scored it 115-112 in favor of toney, he was controlling with his jab, slipped all kinds of punches and for the most part it seemed the fight was going his way. but the 2nd time i watched it i noticed, peter was landing alot more then i thought. body language wise peter was winning both times. he was walking through toneys shots and was obviously the bigger and stronger man. i scored it 114-114 the 2nd time thru and actually gave toney rounds that i thought could have went to peter. peter physically imposed himself on toney and you could see that if you really watch. yeah toney was jabbing well, but peter was landing the really effective shots , and landing shots that people aren't giving him much credit for. its a fight you need to watch a few times to try and see what the judges were seeing - but you will see it. it wasnt a 116-11 fight though. i'm going to watch it a 3rd time and see how the card comes out. i have a feeling i'll be giving those rounds (4 and 12) that i gave to toney, to peter.

strongly agree. you have to watch it carefully. good post
I've said it once or twice in other threads as well. I watched the fight the day after, determined to watch objectively. The scoring was flawed but Sam Peter landed slightly fewer but plenty of clean shots on Toney. Ignoring the commentary you could hear a sound 'WHACK' for many of Peter's shots that may have looked like they weren't clean but damn well sounded it.
Peter landed plenty. He was the aggressor. It was a back and forth fight. Toney showed moments of high volume punching.
I thought many rounds were judgement calls. The fight could have been scored to either fighter without me batting an eyelid. Only the large margin seems odd to me.
I think the decision is valid but the scores unrealistic.
