Holyfield was beating the crap out of him, Czyz had zero sucsess in the HW division.

And as for Toney "making a fool of Sanders", all any objective person has to do is look at the videos of Sanders in his prime and judge for themselves what the outcome would have been vs. a virtually powerless Toney.

....The fight was very close and extremely hard to call. I would not have wanted to be a judge in that one. IMO Toney won a close decision, but I wasn't overly shocked at the verdict. BTW, I hate Toney's guts and wanted to see Peter knock his as out.

Whatever the decision was, it was better than the phoney decision they gave Toney over Rahman, not to mention COUNTLESS blatantly obvious crooked decisions in the corrupt world of boxing, so now they're squawking over this one, all these obnoxious little Toney groupies.

wolf, you're entitled to your opinion but i really feel that your criteria is flawed. you don't have to hurt somebody to beat them soundly in a fight. that's exactly what i was trying to say. yes- toney landed his best shots on peter several times and it didn't do anything but bust peter's face up a little. but he still landed them- over and over and over again. peter responded with his own best shots (the rabbit punch included) which of course shook toney a little. but those shots were few and far between. there is no argument to be made- i'm not even a james toney fan. do i respect toney? of course. have i followed his career scrutinously and pledged allegiance to him under any circumstance? not at all.

i watched the fight saturday not caring who was going to win because the implications of either man winning were positive in my outlook. if peter knocked james out viciously- then he poised himself to clean up the division. if james toney had won via decision then he proved himself a true heavyweight and one of the best fighters in modern times- because while james has beaten many opponents, noone comes close to having the power peter has.

so what happened? the fight went 12 rounds- peter never got a knockdown and toney tagged his face all night long. how many people do you think predicted peter would win a decision? doubtlessly some people did- but not many. that wasn't even a possibility to most of us going into this fight because peter can't box, and toney is a master. the fight played out exactly how i expected it to if toney were to win- yet sam got a split decision because of a small handful of scary moments james endured and escaped via his impeccable boxing prowess. there is nothing to be said in sam's defense. james toney was wronged, utterly wronged. and it's disheartened me a great deal as far as my love for boxing goes. i hate to see things like this, but they happen because there is no 1 unified sanctioning body to oversee the sport and regulate this kind of shady ****.

sam peter didn't win. he went into the fight with a punchers chance and he couldn't finish toney despite 3 opportune moments. other than that he was punching toney's arms and shoulders all night and getting hit in the face over and over again.

                  Mike R -

A good civilized post, for a change, and you express your point of view well, though i disagree as I have said above, so there's no point repeating myself. As for respect, i have zero respect for Toney. I respect a person for what he is and how he behaves, not for his prowess, or lack of prowess, in punching people, and I respect a sportsman for his sportmanship.

"yet sam got a split decision because of a small handful of scary moments james endured and escaped via his impeccable boxing prowess."

I say that he escaped less because of his boxing prowess than Peter's inability to follow up at the opportune moments. He let every moment slide away. If you want to see some dazzling follow ups, look at the Corrie Sanders videos above.

Another thing - Toney was holding on to the ropes with one hand. That's a violation of the boxing rules. Why didn't the referee deduct a point from him for doing that?
