Is it being a champion for a long time?

            Or beating great opponents.

If a fighter loses badly to a huge underdog, than avenges that loss in style, has their status elavated to great?
Or has their status been forever tainted by the loss?
It's obvious you might be referring to Lennox Lewis.

Lewis losing to Rahman didin't taint his legacy because he avenged the loss by knockout.

If anything that just reinforces the idea that first victory by Rahman was merely a fluke.

The bolded is obviously what makes fighters great. But not only how well they perform against top opposition.....but how they can beat the guys they're supposed to beat in impressive fashion. Not fighters that are at "bum" status but more like the rugged fringe contenders.

But yeah.....a guy who fights nothing but fringe contenders and doesn't challenge for a title won't be recognized as great.

Simply because there is a direct correlation between fame and actual ratings. Fighters who nobody has seen fight.....will never be rated as highly as those they watch on an H.B.O. hype machine program.

I suppose you can use common sense to tell who is a legitimate opponent and who isin't......as well.

Staying and fighting only in his country and padding his record at the same time. This is the fast way to become great!

How many whoppers you eat before a big fight defines greatness.
