Boxing is and always has been a shady business. You know that. Don King was at the forefront of it for decades.
But just how plausible/likely/confirmed are the complaints?
Let's go down the NahMean list and see what we come with.
What we (likely) have here, is a perfect storm of issues. Kudos to Fury for the way he fought the second time around.
The only one that stands out as truly questionable is Kenny Bayless. It was completely uncharacteristic of him, the way he was working.
If Bayless is selected to ref Joshua/Fury, I'm betting the farm on Tyson Fury.
But just how plausible/likely/confirmed are the complaints?
Let's go down the NahMean list and see what we come with.
| Weak legs | CONFIRMED | Think about it. They don't call Wilder "bird legs" for nothing. He's been Bambi'd against many fighters of much lesser power and size than Fury. |
| Complications in camp | UNKNOWN | Most camp activities are not public. Possible, since the second fight originally delayed by Wilder's camp. But no way to know for sure. |
| Kenny Bayless | PLAUSIBLE | Bayless let Fury get away with a LOT. He would call a break but allow Fury to still toss strong punches on the inside. This is a guy who barely let Chino fight inside against Floyd. Mighty suspect... |
| Mark Breland (various) | PLAUSIBLE | As far as the towel throw, Wilder said he told his crew never to throw a towel no matter what. We can talk about emotions and all that, point is why did Breland disobey an order for a championship fight? As far as the water, we'll never know the story on that. And we'll never know if Dirrell was indeed the one who told Breland to toss a towel (or why Breland listened to some other guy that wasn't his boss). |
| Ring walk outfit | PLAUSIBLE | While it might sound silly, the fact is the outfit was too much for someone of Wilder's lower physique. We're not just talking a Ric Flair robe here, that outfit had all sorts of lights which means all sorts of electronics, and the mask was real metal. All ****** decisions from Wilder and his camp...but you can't discount the possibility they affected him depending on how long he wore it prior to walking out. I don't believe the lights on the suit had any effect, they were subdued LEDs. |
| Fury's gloves | PLAUSIBLE | Video has shown strange things going on with Fury's gloves. Rewatching the fight, I didn't see anything off specifically, but much of the corner work was edited out of the video and it's hard to find an unaltered version online (su****ious). |
| Foreign objects used by Fury | BUSTED | This has to do with the glove itself. There's no way Fury could have snuck anything into the glove at any point prior to the fight, because wrapping is observed the entire time (and video confirms Jay Deas watched). If such an object was held by the glove, it wouldn't have touched Wilder. The "egg weight" Wilder referred to is impossible, because it has to be worn on the knuckle, and the more likely bao ding ball-shaped object wouldn't have done any damage. |
| Fury's PEDs | PLAUSIBLE | Remember, Fury already tested positive for PEDs in his past. Second, the amount of sheer punching power dramatically increased compared to the first fight. Fury seemingly passed all drug tests, but we know fighters are good at getting around them now. There's just no way to know for sure though. |
| Bicep injury | CONFIRMED | Wilder was confirmed to have torn his bicep after the second fight, which was a factor in the delays seen prior to the third fight. Shelly Finkel denied it, but Wilder himself verified that part of the reason he stopped throwing after Round 4 was because his arm got injured. Wilder has had various arm and hand injuries as he's gotten older; He first injured his bicep against Arreola, he had a wrist injury before the first fight and since the Stiverne fight he's been fighting with various artificial parts in his hands, due to breaking them. |
| Dent in the skull | BUSTED | If you reach up and feel your temple, you can clearly feel a dent just above the jaw, so the fact he had a dent is true, but what can't be true is that it was caused by anything other than nature. However, said dent is never visible because of fat and muscle covering it. No "autopsy" will say anything about this. |
| Fury's nail scratching | BUSTED | There's simply no way a gloved hand - padding or not - can scratch skin like that. Most likely the stitching from the inside of the glove is what caused the cut(s), as this happens all the time. We saw Fury on multiple occasions throw "slap shots" with the inside of the hand to set up a big shot afterwards. |
