Could Michael Coffie be the next Gerald Washington?

He might never be a legit threat to the top 10 but showing up in shape, with even the most rudimentary skills, might take you pretty far these days. I hope he makes some money. Anybody with the balls to launch a pro boxing career after age 30, with almost no amateur background, has my respect and support.

This is the second time watching him fight and I completely agree he doesnt look like he just took up boxing. He seems to have a natural feel for it and some serious power, that uppercut was phenomenal

Man I was gonna bet on Coffie by KO but someone convinced me otherwise due to Rock's amateur experience and age. I couldn't find any tape on the kid but trusted this dude. Always go with your gut. Usually I back the underdog with close odds but Leo really soured me on that last week. Ah well...

He got a lot of time to think about what he wanted to do overall....but there were some sequences where it looked like he was truly improvising, the way he stepped and threw some of his punches was pretty nice; short compact shots. A left uppercut leaning back, that was awesome

that was my first time seeing him, I'll definitely be watching from here on, it'll be fun to track how far he can get. not sure what it will look like if someone comes out and sets a fast pace against him though

Average? Seriously if you think Washington had an average boxing career I think your perspective is seriously skewed.

Washington also began a boxing career after 30. He fought for a legitimate World Title. Washington had a multimillion dollar career in a sport where your “average” athlete struggles to earn 6 figures in a career.

Sure, anybody can turn pro at 30 but it doesn’t mean you are going to have a winning record or even fight in a main event let alone for a world title.

I like Coffie, though he’ll likely never win a legit world title I hope he can get some big fights and have his share of successes in them. I hope he makes enough money to buy a nice home and put some money in the bank. I think that would be remarkable, many levels above average.

I like him. Took up the sport late, two active tours of duty, well spoken and extremely smart. Did you watch the post fight? He broke down everything. He mentioned that when Rock shuffled his feet to throw a punch, the timing didn't line up; and also that he was leaning on him, so he was looking for when he would lean in on him, and shuffle his feet so he could time that uppercut. That's fantastic boxing IQ for someone who just took up the sport. He's earned my respect, and I hope he goes far.
