Comments Thread For: Ryan Garcia: Boxing Belts Don't Matter - I Wear Mine Because It Looks Good

Interim WBC lightweight champion Ryan Garcia believes the boxing belts he's been crowned with have more value on the camera than on his waist. "I'm trying to figure out my next move and where to place this king piece [with the interim WBC interim lightweight title]," Garcia told sports broadcaster Stephen A. Smith on his new ESPN+ show "Stephen A's World."

When the wbo came on the scene in the early 90s, I could see where it was all headed. Boxing has fought to keep the IBC, WBU, WBF, etc etc at the low levels they really are but the wbo was a belt there specifically found a home in the U.K. with cats like Eubank, Hide, Bent, Collins, and various others and I remember at the time Americans held it in low regard as many do the IBO right now but a segment of boxing fans wanted it to be a legit champion because it wa sized as a “domestic level world championship” atthe time. I think it opened the modern flood gates. Now we have super champions, regular champions, interim champions and none of it means a damn anymore

To be fair though as a sanctioning body. The WBO at least in recent times are clearly ahead of the WBA & WBC. The IBF are too.

"Belts Don't Matter" because they've been watered down by a bunch of corrupt sanctioning groups that bend to the buck.

Indeed this was an joyous read. Agree with every point you touched upon. It’s been a joke for a hot minute. I see why a lot of these new school fans even name the WBO something like “Warren ‘n’ Bob Organisation”.

I dunno man, I don’t like the path that this sport has taken, it sure as heck has never been on a totally straight path... but it was a whole lot better than now.

Boxing belts sure matter much less these days and the greedy promoters love it .Hearn in one breath say's how important it is to have all the belts and in the next breath how little they matter. It's a mess that seems couldn't get any more messy but it does.

I think we were better off when the “undisputed” title was the WBA, WBC, and the IBF and there were no interim, super, or regular belts
