I don't respect Mayweather as a person, but as a boxer he is not undeserving of this kind of accolade.

The WBC has done so much to undermine the worth of its own belts in recent years, though, that it's not as big a thing as it would have been 20 or 30 years ago, say.

The WBC has become like a parody of a boxing org that dishes out a belt for basically anything. Let us not forget that when Fury fought Wallin in a nothing fight, the WBC decided they wanted to dish out a 'Mayan' belt (it 'honours the god Gucumatz'), and proposed giving it to the winner of that fight. But they also thought maybe the winner of the Jaime Munguia vs Patrick Allotey fight the same night should get the belt instead. They had a vote on it and couldn't agree which fight deserved it more. And so, naturally, they just made two belts and dished one out to each fight. Such a deep, meaningful belt.
