He isn't but he's a solid gatekeeper type who has been quite unfortunate. Its easy to glance over his record & scoff but he arguably beat Solomon, Kavaliauskas & Kelly.

With his pedigree I think Ennis should have been fighting guys like this half a dozen or so fights back. As someone mentioned Vergil Ortiz who is even younger than Ennis & had around half as many pro fights yet he is fighting better quality opposition.

I believe in Ennis, a lot do but I have to question whether his handlers do. I am starting to question what the hold up is, he's approaching nearly 30 pro fights & only just stepped up slightly to fight a faded, largely inactive Chris Van Heerdan who wasn't any good in the first place. An opponent whom a 18 fight novice in Spence beat to a pulp back when he wasn't a faded, part time boxer if you will

His handler’s definitely are giving the impression that they are terrified for him. The more goods in the sport the better (although seeing how this kid’s career has been handled thus far, I have little faith in him ever being put in there with great fights and not just jumping from opportunity to opportunity where his company smells weakness and vulnerabilities.)

Given Fighter78 post I think its made me look at it a little differently. Maybe Porter/Ugas is a little too soon and I am getting a bit carried away with the eye test.

I still believe Sergey Lipinets is a waste of time & he smashes Lipinets too bits and I don't see it as much of a statement tbh. I don't even think he puts up much of a fight at all he is way too slow & there to be hit. He'd make Ennis look like a prime RJJ

I get he's only 23. He had a lengthy amateur career. He might well be the most skilled and talented fighter out there.

I know fans will say oh this guys a step up and such but most of these names aren't imo. Boots will batter & stop them inside 4 one-sided rounds. He learns nothing, we learn nothing.

I'm not hating on him or saying he is hype, quite the opposite I'm a fan and I think he's potential something special.

We need to see this kid in with someone who is real durable and will test him.
What is his stamina and pacing like? What if he can't just blow right through them? What is his chin & heart like?
I don't think there is one critic on this whole forum who questions his ability but we need to see him in with someone who is going to offer some resistance. Those are the fights that you learn & improve from.

Sergey Lipinets - I don't think he's a step up really or Kavaliauskas.

Why not put him in there with a Shawn Porter or Ugas? If he ain't ready now then when?
I think those are a win-win. He's likely not in any danger or getting knocked out and nobody looks good vs them. If he losses he can come again he's only 23 and its a great learning experience. If he shines I think the world takes note.

Vargas, Lipinets, Khan, these sort of fights are just a waste of time, a waste of a training camp.
Actually the fights you claom are a waste of time (except Khan) are very good step up fights.

If he beats Vargas, Mean Machine, and Lipinets convincingly, he will be ready to not only take on the best, but to completely dominate and/or obliterate them.

Easiest way to prove Boxing is back and better than ever (yah, right) - Put Ennis vs Ortiz on an undercard of a huge PPV event! I can drool:

Crawford / Spence / Pac in one of these possible scenarios
            Ennis vs Ortiz
Berlanga vs Morrell or Steve Nelson
