It is a really good punch that he has mastered over the years, but I saw it as a "Hail Mary" punch from a fighter in trouble rather than the execution of an orchestrated plan.

I will watch it again though and try to see what you saw. Thanks for that.
A "Hail Mary" punch is usually a last desperate wild punch thrown by a fighter under great pressure, without much hope of it landing and not really seeing where it'll land.. Povetkin's left uppercut was very precise, almost casual. He did it very easily, without hurry or pressure, he first drew Whyte's fists back in defence, and whilst they still waving loosely around his head, but wide open, Povetkin shifted slightly left, dipped his shoulder and ..PRESTO..a picture perfect uppercut.

That's exactly how I saw it. Povetkin in trouble and gathering himself for one big all or nothing punch, his only hope of getting out of the situation.

I still think he was in serious trouble, he wasn't on his game plan at all, that uppercut has been his saviour several times and I'm sure he throws it instinctively when the situation calls, but he had lost every round and was being soundly beaten.

Zepeda and The Beast also had a crazy back and forth war. That KO was the most brutal of any that I saw in 2020.
Yeah glad they at least won FOTY was definitely a wild one.

I don't see it that way. Yes he was losing rounds, but his lined that punch up perfectly, not a "desperation" punch but a "certainty" punch. If you look again, you'll see that he got Whyte going on defence, and immediately VERY smoothly... threw the only left uppercut of that fight. almost as if he and Whyte had practiced the move together.

So, although he was KD'd and was losing, I can't say that he didn't expect to be losing (minus the KD's which are always a chance) but he was waiting just for that opportunity to throw that single left uppercut-almost out of nowhere. To me-if not to you- it's as plain as daylight on a summer day.

We can amicably agree to differ.
