Why doesn’t Wilfred Benitez get his due as the best defensive boxer ever?

Lately, I’ve been compiling boxing videos of defensive movies & Benitez stands out. The man was amazing in the ring.

Floyd Mayweather was GREAT but his greatness had more to do with uncanny extremely high boxing IQ & his ability to adapt in the ring & make adjustments. Hence his shoulder-roll style is pretty difficult to replicate & why all these current boxers fail while doing it. The only boxers I’ve seen among the current crop adapt & make infight adjustments are Loma (minus the Lopez fight), Fury (against Cunningham & Wallin), Crawford (most of his fights) & AJ (against Whyte & Povetkin). The rest just fight & stick to what they know or what the corner tells them.

Give Benitez his due - he’s the best defensive boxer ever.

      - -Offense wins fights , not defense.

I’m glad you mentioned him as he was one of the most talented/best defensive fighters. Also the youngest champ ever - only 17 vs Kid Pambele for SLW title, moved up and won WW title vs Palomino (age 20), lost a close fight vs SRL, moved up again and won his third world title (SWW, age 22) vs Hope.
It’s a sad story though, as he developed CTE as early as in his mid 20ties, and was already shot by the time he was KOed by Hilton.
IMO people would mention him more if he wasn’t in such a bad condition now.

                Because he’s not.

                Great defense though.

                  he was outstanding

fought in a very difficult era

to say Benitez was the best defensive fighter ever is a big call
