You ain't wrong, real hard to imagine how Roger could win after the utter dominance of Rene in the first fight. I was suggesting at the start of the thread that Gutierrez had matured and was on a bit of a streak, but honestly it was more that I was trying to justify including it as a Pick Em than I actually thought he had much of a shot.

Honest, had I known in advance the story mentioned by Finito - Gutierrez's recent loss of his mother - I would have probably picked him to win. I can't forget how the same event caused Buster Douglas to fight the fight of his life vs Tyson. Losing a parent before a fight just pushes you to another mental level, at least in certain minds. You ain't wrong, real hard to imagine how Roger could win after the utter dominance of Rene in the first fight. IDK man, that was a bad L he took in the first fight. Mountain to climb... still, you ain't wrong that fighting for someone's memory often seems to bring more out in a dude.Honest, had I known in advance the story mentioned by Finito - Gutierrez's recent loss of his mother - I would have probably picked him to win. That would be an interesting stat to look at. How many fighters win as dogs when a parent dies within x days of a fight.Honest, had I known in advance the story mentioned by Finito - Gutierrez's recent loss of his mother - I would have probably picked him to win. Probably a small sample size but I'd be curious to see the numbers & if it's a real phenomenon or just something we hear loudly when it happens.Comment

Well, to be entirely honest I also remember several instances where a loser was crying after the fight because he could not fulfil his relative's pre-death wish. I can't be more precise about who and when, but I'm sure it happened more than once in the past.
Another "I did it for him" coming to mind now is Darren Barker when he beat Daniel Geale after getting almost knocked out by a body shot. But he was not an underdog like Gutierrez, perhaps...Last edited by Tatabanya; 01-03-2021, 07:42 AM.Comment
