he's right in what he says, he says a better version of him would have made a better fight, which is correct

No version of Smith beats Canelo but if you’re going to give yourself half a chance, then it’s not ideal taking a fight at 4 weeks notice in another country.

But that’s the thing, fighters say it’s not about the money and they’re there to win, which I’ve no doubt they are, but this is top level boxing, if you’re taking fights on 4 weeks notice as the underdog, then you’re there for money. No experienced team who are going into a fight where they’re already the underdog would take a fight on 4 weeks notice if the money isn’t the motivation.

That’s why BJS took himself out of the running when they were talking about a September fight. He signed to fight them in May because he was getting a full camp, so he’s willing to fight, they were a day away from the presser but covid happened. He just wasn’t willing to fight on 4 weeks notice I’m September, he said himself you can’t go into a fight with Canelo with 4 weeks camp if you want to win, You’re only do it for the money if you do that.

point taken, a longer camp with a date would have been much better & yes he still would have lost big i think, hes just not good enough to trouble nelo

correct me if im wrong, has he not been half expecting a nelo fight as a possible contender? that partially makes up for it if true and means he was in good shape for this fight i would say so enjoy the cash callum u finished on your feet without too much damage

The "version" of Smith that showed up on fight night got walked down all night by a much shorter fighter.
Alvarez was the guy showing no respect for Smith's power and coming forward the entire fight.

Well the PED conspiracy theorists felt Canelo’s power punches on their weak chins and flabby bodies.

To me it was clear that Canelo’s power isn’t on some Joshua, Wilder, Beterbiev level. Canelo isn’t even that powerful at 160 either. He hits hard enough to earn respect. But he wins fights based on high ring IQ, really good workrate, keep coming forward while making his opponent miss the big shots or he slips the big shots enough. I’m not saying he doesn’t hit hard as hell, he obviously does. But his power is exaggerated by his critics because they don’t want to admit that he is winning fights based on skills more than anything else. Many fighters hit harder than Canelo, but power can only do so much for you. GGG hits harder than Canelo, but Canelo had him backing up in the rematch. Because Canelo hits hard enough and is defensive enough to avoid real big shots.

What I think will happen however, is that Canelo will keep trying to please his critics who claim he’s ducking Beterbiev at 175, Breidis at Cruiser and Tyson Fury at HW. And he will continue to try to please his critics and will get KTFO due to fighting much naturally bigger men than he is. The height and size difference I imagine went to Callum Smith, but Canelo had the skills to win a wide decision. That will not always be the case. At some point he will meet a bigger more powerful fighter who will be too much.

There are so many fights from 160 to 168 that are a good match for him size wise. GGG, Charlo, Benavidez, Saunders, Plant, Derevyanchenko, etc. He should not worry about his critics, they will drive him mad. After Beterbiev, if Canelo manages to beat him, you will surely have his critics asking him to go up higher and fight Breidis. Just like Mayweather critics were saying he needs to go up to 160 to fight GGG. It just never stops. Meanwhile guys like GGG don’t ever have to move up and his fans would be okay with him fighting the Szeremetas of the world.

When I saw the interview I knew people on here would leap all over this. He said he overestimated his punching power, not that they guy can't punch.

He was very open about how the fight went down. Canelo had him hitting air, he was taking a lot of shots back, was impressed with Canelo's jab, thought it was smart that Canelo attacked his arm, the injury affected only one punch but not his jab, he was impressed with Canelo's movement and traps.

There's nothing there that resembles an excuse. He's held his hands up to being completely and comprehensively beaten.

But it's legitimate to question the extreme Canelo power that is talked about. For about 9/10 rounds he was hitting Smith at will. And Smith never really looked in danger of being stopped except for if his corner pulled him for accumulation of damage. And it doesn't seem like they felt he was going to end up flat on his back.

There’s being in shape but then there’s mentally preparing for fighting one of the best in the sport and having a full camp fully focused on what you need to be doing against a fighter like that.

Like I say though, it would have made no difference in terms of the fight result but that’s not really the point

I just think going into a fight like that on 4 weeks notice is more money motivated than really believing you can win.

Of course, no fighter is going to admit that though, especially while active.
