I still don't know how a guy like Smith has the length he does but has such a **** jab. Having a solid, educated jab is a start for anyone looking to fight him.

Solid footwork and the ability to punch on the move and off the pivot effectively.

A solid jab, and a ring IQ high enough to realize that Canelo won't throw unless his feet are planted.

Callum Smith: Smith tried to use his jab to maintain distance but Canelo is built like a tank but also slippery. Also, Smith allowed Canelo to get a head of steam so covering up along the ropes and trying to counter isn't the answer.

James Kirkland: A lot of people felt like Callum Smith should have simply thrown caution to the wind but they obviously forgot about this fight. Kirkland tried to go into savage mode and got savagely knocked out. In other words, trying to exchange with a handspeed disadvantage also isn't the answer

Amir Khan: Of course we know how this one ended, however Khan's handspeed was bothersome initially. Khan obviously got walked down but he did show that a smaller guy with handspeed can do better than a bigger guy trying to catch and counter on the ropes

Erislandy Lara: Lara costs himself by moving so much, and he might have pulled out the victory if he had stood his ground a little more. He did show that good footwork can be difficult for Canelo

Floyd Mayweather Jr: Obviously there was no shame in a young Canelo losing to an older HOF fighter, however Mayweather's performance showed that a smaller guy with both handspeed (Khan) and footspeed (Lara) would cause issues because Canelo didn't have the advantage as far as being slick.

Gennady Golovkin: Golovkin wasn't able to throw combinations because he was wary of Canelo's handspeed. Instead he just hung in there with a thudding jab and an iron will.

Now, to answer your question, I think a smaller fighter (or a big guy, but not so big that he's a big target), with comparable hand and footspeed (or overall coordination) would trouble Canelo the most.

The big guys (Kovalev, Callum Smith) because he's too slippery and it's over once he gets a head of steam and starts ripping body shots.
You just explained why Canelo is having success against these big guys. Speed. The big guys are slow compared to him, in both defensive movement, and offensively.

If you have footwork + speed (Floyd, Lara), or footwork + timing (ggg) you will give him problems.

Canelo fought Jacobs after Jacobs struggled badly with Derev
Canelo fought Kovalev when Kovalev was completely done
Canelo fought Callum after Callum`s terrible performance against Ryder

It is what it is. He always fights guys past their prime or guys that looked terrible in last fight.
Jacobs had already lost to GGG, and looked bad against Derev, but I think it wasn't the worst fight to be made for Canelo. Jacobs had gone close with GGG, and did have Speed+Footwork.

Which is why Jacobs was able to make it such a boring night. It really felt like a fight Jacobs could have won if he stepped on the gas even slightly more.

I give Canelo credit for fighting Jacobs, even if like most of his other fights against legitimate opposition, it was not an extremely impressive performance.

Canelo vacating to avoid GGG, and waiting for what he saw as GGG being vulnerable after the Kell Brook fight, and going close with Jacobs.

With the weights we now see Canelo fighting at, his excuse that he wasn't a true middleweight is an excuse that has aged like milk.

Mayweather toyed with him, he was talking to the audience while fighting the bum. Canelo's bet "achievement" is a draw with a bum named bumlovkin, a guy who made a name for himself beating geale and monroe jr

Any half decent boxer with a bit of movement and a good jab will beat him, canelo is the typical flat footed Mexican fighter, I can't believe people actually watched the sh** fight last night.

GGG did it. So fair judges is an answer.

Lara arguably did. Canelo hasn’t fought a slick southpaw since, so maybe he still struggles with that style. We won’t know until he fights Saunders.

Said it since he fought Skoglund

I have no idea why they never used that reach and develop it into a real weapon with the jab. Skoglund got past the jab easily and bothered him, Ryder too.

I actually thought Eubank JR might’ve beaten Smith had they
met in the WBSS, after I watched Smith v Skoglund. Styles make fights and if you haven’t got a good jab or footwork to keep Eubank away , he will get inside and beat you with pure workrate.

I've only seen Smith fight Canelo, Groves, Ryder and N'dam so I didn't see those earlier warning signs. He's still had enough fights that you would think they'd develop the jab after seeing how easy it is to get past it but apparently they don't care about it.

I don’t necessarily think Joe Gallagher is a great trainer.

Hosea Burton is another huge guy for his weight, also trained by Gallagher but hasn’t got a good jab considering his reach advantage usually.

Obviously Smith just isn’t on the level of Canelo, jab or no jab. But the point still stands about why they never made into a real weapon or really worked on it over the years.

Even I noticed it a few years ago so why didn’t his team?
