Comments Thread For: Szeremeta: Golovkin Is Past His Prime But He Is Still Dangerous

Kamil Szeremeta pays as little attention to those who dismiss his chances as he does to the claims that a lesser version of Gennadiy Golovkin awaits him in the ring this weekend. The long-postponed middleweight title fight finally takes place this Friday at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The bout comes more than 14 months after first being pitched to the International Boxing Federation (IBF), whose title Golovkin claimed in a spirited 12-round war with Sergiy Derevyanchenko last October at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

I agree GGG is past his prime but with a guy with only 5 KOs we might see another Gaele type knockout.

I think they’ve done an excellent job of preserving gggs longevity . But I did notice that ggg has really changed since the step up in competition and the big paydays. He’s not the same hungry lion

He’s right about that. GGG has a lost more than a step. He doesn’t have the same ambition as he did back then and he’s lost that consistent body attack. He’s only head hunting now. If only there were time machines to bring fighters back to their prime.

It's almost as if the body naturally slows down as you age. Some guys here apparently don't get that.

Marquez, Floyd, Pacquiao, Klitchko, Hopkins all did great past 37. In my opinion most of these fighters except for Floyd had rougher fights as well. So as easy as gggs competition was the age argument isn’t very strong

Well Golovkin is still doing great then since he's doing all this at the age he is. You can be good enough to still compete with guys younger than you but I'm sure most of those guys would say they were better when they were younger and could physically do things back then that they weren't able to do when approaching their 40's. They adapted their fighting style and either won or lost. Getting older and fighting better opposition can happen at the same time. And for those 5 guys you mentioned, there's a **** ton of other guys that were a shell of themselves or retired at that age. We don't know exactly where Golovkin sits on that spectrum but he is older, that's undeniable.

He changed after Canelo I, I think he got bitter when he realized how the business side rules over the sport. Now he just goes for money and revenge - in that order. Not sure I can blame him.
