Go back and watch that fight. You'll hear a wide chorus of booing until Ali finally starts fighting back. They didn't like his backing off back then.
IN HINDSIGHT people can appreciate how strategic and smart Ali really was given that Foreman was extremely dangerous for him. But you're reacting based on your hindsight analysis and NOT the reaction at the time, which was extremely negative.
