The nostalgists will never be able to debunk videos like these. Even HW boxers from the 70s are technically poor for modern standards.Ascended likes this.

Casuals speak about yesteryears heavyweight fighters as if they were only 180lbs 5'10 fighters.
There was Jess Willard, Jack Johnson, Luis Firpo, Max Bear, Max Schmelling, Joe Louis. They weren't the smallest heavyweights, they had heart, either you win or you don't eat.
Not saying that they would beat today's fighters, but there are present fighters that are from the top 10 that are not as talented as those fighters I mentioned.
Don't forget also the filming wasn't the best to show their tactics and skills.

Watch Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier III.
Now watch Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder I, II, & III.
Anthony Joshua vs Usyk, Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Kiltschko.
Muhammad Ali & Joe Frazier are way off their peak. But they are fighting like Super Middle Weights.
The same kind of intensity, and speed of thought. At a higher pace in very hot and humid conditions '15 rounds'.
In comparison Fury for the most part in his fights, is stumbling about. And I have no idea why people rate his speed so highly.
After a few rounds he consistently looks as if he is fighting under water. That is a trademark trait of these super heavyweights.
Past the 2000's, if you really analyse the sport. Notice how there have been very few all-time great fights.
Especially in the heavyweight division. Fury vs Wilder was a good trilogy. But in terms of skill for skill and intensity.
It does not compare to Evander Holyfield vs Rid**** Bowe.
Note: In some ways these Super Heavyweights are better, but in other ways they have regressed. Also across the whole board in boxing, in all divisions. At elite level it seems like inside fighting is limited. The higher you progress through the levels, the less aggressive the sport becomes 'That seems to be how the sport has developed'.
Similar to the way in Tennis, players don't attack the net anymore at top level. There are very few surf and volley type players. The higher you go up in the levels, the more players just sit back and wack the ball from the back. I am no tennis expert, but just using that development as comparison.
Fighters at elite level these days, they all want to sit back and fight from long to mid-range 'Primarily'.
