I do have to question the referee (and corner) though, why was doctor never called? It was obviously in a bad state. I was expecting doctor a couple rounds earlier.

You completely dismiss the fact and brush aside that it was more than just pain. A medical doctor just stated had he continued his career was finished and still may be depending on how he recovers. Given the extent of the trauma yes he was in more than just pain.
