I don't know if Great Black Hopes is the term I'd use, but there were certainly fighters whose fan-base certainly latched on for no other reason than race. Not necessarily a bad thing, ethnic pride is normal and healthy. So long as you aren't hating a fighter for his race or ethnicity.

One who comes to mind in recent years would be Adonis Stevenson. A lot of fans thought he was the man at 175 and that Kovalev and all the others were ducking him.
