Did Roy Jones have money issues prior to his exhibition vs. Tyson?

Once upon a time Roy was the #1 P4P in boxing yet I remember reading a few years back that the reason Roy continued on well after his prime and after being brutally knocked out (several times) was due to the fact that he had serious money woes. Does anyone know if there's any truth in this? Would be a shame if true.

Your memory was a bit out. He never had any money troubles. He just loved boxing too much to give it up whilst he still felt fit enough, until it gave him up. He's been worth between $40-50 mill for a long time.

THat's what he said , because the question came up often, because he still kept fighting whilst well past his best.

nobody keeps on fighting this long despite getting KOed a number of times unless it was for money. I remember he had tax problems:

Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov explained the financial struggles of former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. A few days ago, BoxingScene.com reported some details being discussed overseas, which claim the 46-year-old veteran is facing a tax bill of $3 million in the United States.

Glad he finally made a decent payday with Mike.

Roy said he wouldn’t have never taking the fight with Tyson unless it was for a great cause . But I’m having trouble believing him . There’s no doubt these guys at least Jones saw some type of pay and it looked like Mike carried him from the opening bell .

          - -Roy richer than anyone here but not mega rich.

Mr Field and Tyson had bankruptcies and lost everything that weren't stolen.

Uhm negative ghost rider. He may have been worth that once upon a time but he is far removed from anything resembling that type of net worth.

Sadly they all have money problems, some more than others. Jones, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Tarver...u are about to see the rest coming out of the wood works hoping for exhibition bout paydays to cover child support or other life long obligations held over their head since retirement. It is really sad when I see mostly black boxers end up in the same predicament. The cycle just persists.

It only takes a few seconds to find out about what any well known pro boxer is worth. Tyson has used his name to go from being near broke to being worth about 3 million bucks. Jones is a very rich man according to Forbes and worth about 12 million bucks if I remember correctly. I am just curious how the champs are doing and it is so quick and easy to find out. Both Tyson and Jones were paid a million bucks each for their fight.

That's their own fault. But let me guess... blame whitey or anyone else but themselves?
