    A sensible piece IMO.

People seem obsessed with the precise definition of the word. But in boxing terms quitting means giving up while you still had a chance of making it to the final bell.

The reality is that, by dictionary definition, fighters 'quit' all the time. How many could have made it to their feet by the count but the will just wasn't there anymore? How many don't respond to the ref because their will has been broken and their head is gone? Certainly plenty stop fighting and cover up in the corner to stop themselves taking
further clean punishment while fighting back. Logically, only those fast asleep from a punch didn't 'quit'.

Dubois retired due to injury. He'd been very seriously injured by his opponent and he knew it. That's a legitimate stoppage and a great win for Joyce.

I just don't see it as 'quit' at all. And I find it hard to believe that any boxing fan would label it way. I want to see people win and lose, but I certainly don't demand people be disabled or paralysed. I just don't get why people need that to be the ending.

Exactly Kell Brooks doctor said his vision flashed black and he has sustained an orbital fracture
Dubois did not fold and was arguably winning the fight until then, he saves his eye to fight another day
He admits Joyce won fair and square
One year ago Joyce would have smashed him to bits but young Dubois is improving his skill and composure

Calling someone a "quitter" carries baggage, and it's abundantly clear that they're not just making observations, they're trying to talk smack. I'll admit that I had that same reaction at first because I'd backed Dubois to win and thought that he was ahead at the point of the stoppage, but I didn't know for sure that he'd fractured his orbital bone. Injuries like that aren't just excruciatingly painful, they're career-threatening and potentially life-changing. Fighters don't owe the fans the obligation of taking that risk and potentially going blind in one eye and shouldn't be criticised if they pull out of a fight if that risk is clear and present. The same goes for any other similarly severe injury.

The persistent quitter talk on here, even after the nature of the injury came out, was actually kind of eye-opening as to the general sentiments and worldviews of some of the people who post on here. I really feel that a significant number of posters aren't here to enjoy good fights or celebrate the successes of fighters they like, they just want to see fighters fail or suffer or fall short in some way and then gloat about it.
Best post of the thread. I’d call each one that uses the term a yellow coward. Each and every one of them. Simple cowards.

Only comments like these has never stared down the sights of an M16A2 or a SAW 5.56 from 500 yards knowing it could be you on the other end of a barrel as well. USMC taught me a lot about people in general and most are yellow cowards.

Daniel DUBIOUS has lost his fan base. It's a ********ic sport, the will of the majority is all that matters. You don't have to like it.

But hey, bring a shield and have it in your corner to be carried out on instead.

The optics will look great but it wont make any difference to the paramedics, hospital staff and families...
Totally unnecessary, absurd and rhetorical post.

Brits will still support DDD, don't worry about that, we don't abandon our guys if they take an L.

That's a good take on it. He has been labelled a quitter. But then, it's a spectator sport so you have to accept the popular opinion. And lets face it, Dubious Dan now has a 100% quitting rate in difficult fights. So labeling him a quitter might not be without merit.

So your calling all the experienced pro boxers who called him it cowards then?
