Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia: Tank Davis Is Real Deal & Deserves Credit, But Lopez Is The Man At 135

Mikey Garcia was an interested observer in Gervonta Davis' vicious knockout of Leo Santa Cruz last month. Garcia was a lightweight until early 2019 when he vacated his WBC and IBF titles to move up two divisions in an unsuccessful attempt at facing Errol Spence Jr. in a one-sided fight.

Anyone else hope that Mikey would have accepted that he's not a welterweight, announced he's going back down to HIS division, and challenging Teofimo or Tank immediately?

Nope..... not one bit. Loud and clear for everyone to see and read... MIKEY CAN'T MAKE 135!!!! You guys living on that can move on. I'm sure he could do 140. But he hasn't been at 135 in forever now. It would be a Kell Brook all over again. I'm a die hard Mikey fan. And sure I agree he's not going to be getting massive KOs or anything at welterweight. But he can definitely hang and win fights. I personally feel he's best suited for 140. But you or I don't make his career choices. He does. And he's lost one fight with all the choices he's made. Until that changes, I'm not going to speculate on what he should do. I'll wait to see what happens, and THEN make judgements.

Mikey cant make 135 no moe. I'd love to see him strictly fight at 140. Teo is on his way there anyway, you got progaris taylor ramirez, problem is top stank owns that division

I think 140 would be better also because his power would probably translate better.

Mikey's head alone weighs 60lbs, but, tbh, he could make 135lbs if he was disciplined with his diet, which he is not.

140 would be best case but there’s no money there. Best option for Mikey would be to wait Spence and Crawford out and fight either Ortiz or ennis or the 140 boys (Taylor, Prograis, Ramirez) when they move up.

                  That's my point.

Because he didn't look like a 140 or 147 fighter when he was in there against Spence or Vargas. He looked bloated and easily able to drop down to at least a catchweight of 137.

Sure he "could" make 135. But the issue here is that Mikey is not a gym rat, high talent fighter. He's more like a club fighter that shows up to whoop dat ass without all the fancy training. I view him as a fighter. Not an elite boxer. If he turns into some fine tuned, 6pack, body builder, it's changing everything that's great about him. He's a timing puncher. A fighter can't just completely reinvent himself once he's already who he is. He can improve of course. But he's still going to be the same guy at heart. Making 135 is not going to change anything for the better. With everything it would take for him to get to 135
