Important to note that Smith looked terrible last time out, against probably just a top 10 SMW.

It is a convenient selection for Canelo.

Did Plant also look terrible last time out?

That was his #1 option but that fight was not doable for December.

Smith is a champion at 168 and before Ryder was seen as the best fighter in the weight class. Now this fight isn't good enough?

Derevyanchenko didn't look great the fight prior to GGG either. Yet, we saw the type of fight he gave GGG.

I'm struggling to see who exactly Canelo should have fought instead, considering he wanted a fight before year's end? Charlo? Like Plant, it would be on PPV and just not possible before 2021. GGG? Nope, another fight not doable. Andrade? Sure, that would have been good but is Smith a much worse fight or anything?

I just have to call it like I see it. After the Ryder fight, Smith looks very vulnerable now. It looks like he was picked for a reason.

As you said though, it doesn't mean it won't be a close fight. We could get Porter (who lost imo to Ugas)-Spence or Derevy (who lost imo to Culcay)-GGG.

My guess would be it is a tough contested fight tbh. It is still at 168 and Canelo was still fighting below 160 a couple years ago. I will be interested to see if there are any clauses involved.

Basically, when you are Canelo, and you are the 'man' and top 3 pfp on anyone's list really. Then expectations will be high each fight. You will be expected to fight the best available guy on even terms, otherwise you will get a little pushback.

Honestly if it's on even terms and the scorecards are legit then I have no issue with the fight. But I won't hold my breath on that yet. And it looks a little curious after Smith looked so bad last time out.

For me personally I would prefer to see Canelo face Bivol or Beterbiev if he is really 'chasing greatness' or any of that BS. Those are the fights that I would really be excited about and really feel like he was testing himself.

Can't fault him for not taking those either though, they are at 175 and really tough fights.

And if Canelo can keep winning (ie not getting blown out in fights or KOed) then he will keep stacking Ws and keep stacking millions and millions. I'm not mad at him for that.

Plant took longer than expected to get a stoppage vs an undeserving contender. Smith got a gift decision in a fight he should have lost vs a fringe contender. BIG difference don't you think?

Great fight. A little surprised canelo took this one. This is not a totally shot Kovalev, and Callum actually has some good infighting skills as well as being big. Don’t judge him only on the Ryder fight. He clearly underestimated him and had an off night. Would like to see him vs plant too.
Beterbiev will probably never happens as Canelo would be ragdolled. But Beterbievs career is getting wasted and he is up in age, so maybe in 2-3 years time when he is only 40%

Not gonna lie I liked more the Plant fight but this is a very good fight. Very happy to watch Alvarez fight, was worried he wasn't gonna fight till next year.

Will make my prediction after both guys step into the scales.

it was plant team (pbc-haymon) who rejected the fight cuz time wasnt enough for a canelo ppv fight... it was canelo who offered the fight to them first, they said next year...
canelo wanted plant, plant wanted more time, so canelo gets smith in the mean time...
