Yeah, pretty much. In a perfect and just world I would agree that viewer ratings shouldn't matter, and that it should only matter how good and accomplished you are in the ring (although to be fair Thurman also had a superior resume to Crawford and still does actually).

But in the real world this sport, like all pro sports, is a business in the end. And ratings of course equals money.

If a network has a choice between these two fighters to show their fight:

A) Elite fighter but is a minimal draw
B) Average fighter with a strong draw

They're going to go with fighter B every time, even though fighter A is superior in the ring. Look at Broner. He has proven himself to be a middling gate keeper and has been for years now but when he was active his viewer numbers were still doing significantly better than many who were actually better than him. Thus he was receiving bigger purses.
