Teofimo Lopez warns Gervonta Davis not to overprice himself: 'You are not Mayweather”

Teofimo Lopez warns Gervonta Davis not to overprice himself: 'You are not Mayweather; I'm the A-side'

Fresh off an upset of Vasiliy Lomachenko to unify lightweight titles that announced him as a future pound-for-pound star of the sport, unbeaten Teofimo Lopez isn't afraid to let the world know he's feeling himself just a bit.

"Trust me, I've got smiles everywhere," Lopez told "Morning Kombat" on Monday. "I'm happy. Just the fact that I can say, 'Go f--- yourself,' or anything like that, it's amazing."

The 23-year-old Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) outboxed and bullied the smaller Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) in October. He's hoping to return in March or April and said he's in talks with New York's Madison Square Garden, Hard Rock Stadium outside of Miami and the new Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as possible venues provided at least a portion of each venue's capacity can be filled with fans amid the pandemic.

Although Lopez sees an eventual move up to boxing's money division of welterweight, he acknowledges there are enough big names he hasn't yet fought at lightweight to give him motivation to keep making 135 pounds despite his body starting to outgrow it.

But whether his next big fight comes against fellow rising stars Gervonta "Tank" Davis, Devin Haney or Ryan Garcia, the native of Brooklyn, New York, has a trio of messages to share first. Actually, it's more like a question -- "what can they bring to the table for me?" And demands that you lower your price to understand there's only one A-side.

"[Fighting them next] is a possibility, it's just that they can't overprice themselves," Lopez said. "I didn't get what I would've gotten had this COVID not hit. I had to take a pay cut and I'm sure Loma did as well. Yes, money applies to everything and this is our career. We are putting everything on the line and we are jeopardizing that we might have to start from ground zero again if any of us loses.

"Yes, we can make a big fight happen but everybody needs to stop thinking about the business aspects as of right now. Yes, it's a business but Tank, you're not [Floyd] 'Money' Mayweather and you will never be 'Money' Mayweather unless you fight oppositions and let your ego go. The same applies for Devin Haney and the same applies for Ryan Garcia. These guys are trying to be 'Money' Mayweather but you have to be 'Pretty Boy' first. You have to work your way up."

Lopez's reference is to Mayweather, the retired PPV king and current promoter of Davis, who built his name first in the lower weight classes under the nickname "Pretty Boy" and took on all comers to gain critical respect. Once that was established, he moved up to welterweight and called his own shots under the moniker of "Money," a villainous alter ego who produced record-breaking numbers at the box office.

Wow. This is a surprisingly mature take on the current situation. Sounds like he's willing to give a little to get a little. "Pretty Boy" first. Well said.

Respect to Lopez for pursuing and beating Loma, shutting me up. But wasn’t he also going on about money before Loma gave up part of his earnings? Yes Lopez should be the A side in a fight against those names. But Tank would want at least parity (If they allow him to fight Lopez) and he just sold his first PPV last week, Haney is on DAZN so that’s easier as we wouldn’t have to talk about sales and numbers. Garcia also is on DAZN but I can only see Haney been available.

the largely unknown Lopez... is the A-side with Tank?

          on what planet ?

I like Teo way more than tank, and I support him... but listening to a largely unknown kid refer to himself as the A-side, is a little hard-to-stomach

Mayweather actually was a superstar, and he was clearly the A-side over every opponent... but people used to cry about him pulling that card all the time... now, a largely unknown kid can pull that stunt?

          here are the facts...

          1) until you are an actual star, who generates a TON of revenue... NEVER, mention that A-side/B-side bullshlt... it makes you look like a bltch with built-in excuses

          2) being slightly more popular than your - equally as unknown opponent - is ridiculous justification to start talking like Mayweather... none of those guys are superstars, Garcia is the most likely

          3) Lopez is more popular than tank... really??? ... not sure about tha man

oh jeez... how do fights ever get made with silly diva shlt like that happening LMAO

FACT: Lopez is NOT a "star"... he is a young phenom who is on his way up

Agreed. Love both fighters but Tank is the draw. Anyone who says differently is not telling the truth.

Damn Teo is smelling himself for sure. We shall see who is the a side if he and Tank get down. Tank has alot of money and power behind him, whereas the Bobfather isnt gonna go to a purse war for young Lopez imo.

and when Tank starts pulling that same bullshlt, I will say the exact same thing about him

                * neither of those guys are genuine stars
                * so, neither of them should mention that A-side/B-side bullshlt

Mmm its all 50/50 if ask me the closest to anyone whos an A side or highest potential as such is ryan garcia and thats cause social media following hollywood type of looks we know its scripted for em win title then go acting n casual fans recognize. A good scale for A side aka most popular is if haney garcia davis lomachenko n lopez walked in a regular non sports bar the most recognized would be garcia then tank lomachanko then haney n finally lopez. I literally know women who know nothing about boxing on there own but know of seen or follow garcia. Similar at 147. Spence by far most popular name after pacquiao then after that its debatable just many people know porter as crawford n porter seen all the time talking or fighting real fights. Crawford is background al haymon quiet shadow like figure that doesnt like being seen much and if it honestly wasnt for espn no1 but real fans would know him. He got crazy talent but fights no names and past prime ppl fights no1 wants to see n he doesnt talk smack so alot of people dont know him.

I think teo wants to humble somebody like he was humbled in negotiations with Loma. The thing is tank won’t be humbled, Haney probably won’t get the fight bc the draw would be too small and Garcia hmmm I don’t know about Garcia.
