James Toney Puts it All On The Line

i don't have to repect anything!

my opinion, no, he doesn't make the best possible fights. this upcoming fight with peter is an exception, however. this is a fight where, if peter comes in not trying to totally box his way to a W, toney could very well lose. i'd place a better chance on peter to beat toney any day of the week compared to rahman.

look at toneys past fights: john ruiz, dominick guinn, rydell ****in' booker, etc. these are not particularly exciting fights or the best match-ups. holyfields corner threw in the towel in jt's first fight at heavyweight, and that's the only thing close to a stoppage that he's had so far.

what about him "ducking" wladimir klitschko. yeah, i used the word "ducking". it's simple, you don't badmouth a fighter like he did, say you'll fight him for free, say that he's easy to beat, and then turn down 1.5 mil and a shot at a title - which really isn't deserved in the first place.

i think all of us were looking forward to a klitschko/toney fight. well, on the bright side, at least toney is fighting someone who has a bit of power.

I wouldn't call it ducking, I'd call it a smart decision(read my sig), out of all the title holders Wlad is the only one with enough of a skill,size & reach advantage to actually beat him, i think Toney would mop the floor with the rest of them, You night not have respect for Toney but I do & i hope he gets his hands on a HW title & goes out on top.

anybody who has ever stepped into a ring, or even did light sparring has been hurt at one point or another. the point is to maintain a poker face and that quality where an opponent can't tell if he hurt ya or not. i garauntee you that toney has been hurt multiple times in his long career. for example, he didn't go to a doctor and complain about kidney punches after the rahman fight because he felt great.

AllEyesOpen, yes, i agree that athletes or sports figures don't neccessarily need to be role models - but racism is a line i don't think any person should lower themselves to. it's hard to respect a person who is so damn unethical. i can say i have a certain respect for his boxing career in the ring, but that is where it stops. and really, for me atleast, it takes a bit more than just being somewhat talented to really gain a good measure of respect from me.

btw, your sig is from the book of war, by sun tzu as you know. i have read that book many times throughout the years. i also think that a lot of people don't understand it the way it was intended to be understood. a good interpretation of the book does make a difference. did you know that that book, the art of war, is actually standard reading material for people training in the fbi and cia?

How does Toney disrespect the sport? He's got what,80 some professional fights? And the guy entertains with his skill, he's a natural fighter, more relaxed looking in the ring than anybody I can think of.

His technical skills are superior to any HW out there. However, you can't tell me that a pro athlete who's been in boxing for as many years as Toney has, can't control his weight coming in to fight for the WBC title. The fact that he was grossly overweight proves only one thing: he didn't care. To get so many title shots and to blow all of them is just not right.

I ment hurt in the ring to the point he couldn't continue or he was visibly shaken for a period of time, sure he took alot of bodyshots from Rahman that his obvious flab was unable to pertect his kidneys from, but he fought on & give Rahman a good beating in the process, I wouldn't call that a poker face, I'd call it heart. I understand you distaste for the way he disrespects his opponents & makes racial remarks, but i don't think anyone could call Toney somewhat talented, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree cause Toney's one of my favorite fighters.

Oh & by the way I like you sig & avatar, Ichi the killer is one of the most twisted movies I've ever seen. I'm a fan of Takashi Miike, My favorite so far is "Audition", & I thought it was cool how he made a cameo in "Hostel" which is one of the sickest US movies I've seen in ages, sorry to get off topic

I didn't know it was standard reading for FBI & CIA but I own it, I didn't find the quote somewhere, I was reading it & I thought it was a deep description of how to win in battle, you have to use strategy & win where you know you have the advantage, not engage in battle when you know you're at a disadvantage, which is the point I was trying to make with Vlad. Also I have the Shambhala Classics edition, I wouldn't know if it's the best translation but it a very good one IMO

yeah, i see what you mean. honestly, what i think it is with toney, is that he has become so desensitized to the punches he's taking that he doesn't immediately feel the impact that they actually have on him. well, just look at his speech throughout the years. it hasn't gotten better.

well, that or just pride. when i say "poker face", i'm also referring to body language and movement as to not look like you've been hurt. i've seen toney hurt, but he covers it up fairly well. nowadays, he's taking to resting on the ropes when he gets tired or gets popped well.

hostel wasn't as good as i thought it could be. the whole first half was fairly boring. then again, i don't believe i've seen the uncut version. i'd recommend miike's "imprint" if you haven't seen it yet. it was from that horror series on showtime. a good movie that goes side by side with ichi the killer is battle royale. damn good movie. heard takashi miike and beat takeshi (kitano) have a movie together - that's a goddamn dream team if i've ever heard of one in the film industry.

shambalah(sp?) edition of that book might not be the best. i believe i have read it, as well as a few other books they have published and find that they usually are not written all that well. especially if it's something taoistic in nature, such as the art of war. the chinese language is extremely hard to authentically convert into english, so it is important to have a good detailed translation. your sig isn't bad though.

What I like most about Hostel was that IMO is was actually possible, money buy everything in this world. Audition was so well directed & makes a complete 180 from a love story to a real ****ed up story.I still haven't seen the dead or alive trilogy,& i'll look for imprints. I own the Lao Tsu & The Anelects but they're Penguin Classics, which i think are very informative, they give you alot of backround information(I thought Lao Tzu was an actual historical person until I read that it was most likely a compilation of ancient philosophies long forgotten in time). I'm sure when it comes to a complex language like Chinese & such abstract ideas that it's hard to get a perfect translation, but I've come to appreciate alot of eastern philosophies thanks to the books I own. As for Toney he's always gonna talk **** about anyone for whatever reason, some people just take it at face value & laugh at the **** Toney comes up with, but in the ring he's still one of my favorite fighters
