  • Comments Thread For: Devin Haney: I Agree With Floyd Mayweather - There Are Too Many Belts In Boxing

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a full-blown tirade last week criticizing sanctioning bodies and promotional companies, including his own, for bestowing too many belts on boxers, and for enabling the "champion" billing on pugilists.

      May 7, 2019:

      WBC Lightweight Status

The WBC board of governors has finalized the process and has determined the final ruling regarding the lightweight division status.

The WBC has accepted Vasiliy Lomachenko petition to fight for the WBC lightweight title. A fight between mandatory challenger, Luke Campbell, from UK and multiple weight division champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko, from Ukraine, with the vacant WBC lightweight championship on the line, is officially ordered.

Mikey Garcia, as WBC Emeritus champion, reserves his right to fight for the lightweight title.

A tournament will be ordered to determine the mandatory challenger of the division with the following fights.

Silver champion, from Russia, Zaur Abdullaev must fight Devin Haney, from USA and Teofimo Lopez, from Honduras, must face Javier Fortuna, from Dominican Republic.

The winners of these matches will fight each other to determine the mandatory contender of the division.

The WBC is extremely happy with this resolution which will bring very important activity to the division including 7 amazing fighters from different countries, making this process a true world competition.

Why isn't Haney kicking that fake title to the curve then? He pays a sanctioning fee every time he defends it, he could easily tell the WBC no thanks, when you have an actual title I could fight for, let me know. So all these are confusing statements, even from Mayweather who allows his fighters to fight for secondary belts.

It’s probably the interviewer baiting for these type of comments but nevertheless what an absolute moron Haney is when he himself was awarded his current belt yet he hasn’t beat any champs. Got a free belt yet has the nerve to say there’s too many belts

Because Haney knows that for people not named Floyd or Canelo, belts (except WBO) are the attraction to get fighters to accept fights.

The most recent example: Terence "Keef, Shawn and Danny ain't got no belts" Crawford.

How is the WBC title fake but not the franchise?

Same reason the WBA (Super) is real and the WBA (Regular) is fake. Only the top champion is real. Haney got his belt without fighting. Lomachenko won that belt in the ring and then got promoted to Franchise, making the Franchise title the real WBC title in that division. Haney is no more a lightweight champion than Tank Davis. Teofimo Lopez is the one true lightweight champ.

Fighters just gotta say, "not paying any sanctioning fees"; no fake titles.
Same with promoters, don't ask for sanctioning; no kite take titles.
