All this talk of why Lomachenko fought this style and why he was so defensive, but could part of the reason be that he was front row for the Commey KO and that impacted his game plan? I think Lomachenko certainly underestimated certain parts of Lopez's game, but he clearly gave him a lot of respect from the start and didn't want to get hit with a big shot early on. Lomachenko all week was saying it was a lucky shot that Lopez landed against Commey, but did he truly believe that?
Is It Possible Lomachenko Was a Bit Shook From The Commey KO?

No he wasnt shook. Teo is just a strong guy. It wasnt the power that had him shook. It was the quickness and skills i think he underestimated of Teo.Comment

LIS, there are certain things that Lomachenko definitely underestimated about Lopez. But he also was on his bike from the opening bell and from the instructions in his corner, it seemed like this was the game plan and they would drown Lopez late in the fight.
Drowning a young fighter late in the fight isn't terrible thinking or anything. BUT, the way Lomachenko came out and with this game plan, it was clear it was different from what he's accustomed to doing. Him being FRONT ROW for the Commey stoppage had to have impacted him or his father in some way IMO.Comment

CompBox Stats for punches landed in first 7 rounds
Teo - Loma
6 - 1
11 - 5
11 - 2
7 - 5
7 - 5
11 - 7
11 - 6
Totals after 7, Teo 71- 282; Loma 31-80
Interesting stats . It was a good fight when Lomachenko finally showed up in the 8th. I thought the 116-114 score was a good one and I'd like to see a rematch sometime early next year.Comment

He had a lot of success defensively. He was hit some also but never seemed “shook”.
I think he just got TOO comfortable and let the fight slip away. He was REALLY effective when he was throwing, to the point that at one time I thought Teo was hurt or really rattled and I thought itd be business as usual after that.
This was just so Lara esque. Because he had success defensively and landed at will, I can see why he felt he won. His corner was also not concerned. Just fell asleep at the wheel and Teo never stopped trying and stayed with him. Even if he was missing a lot, he just kept throwing and going like he didnt.Comment

Could be. But Walters had some big KOs and Loma seemed unfazed by that going in. I remember what Froch said about Abraham, that he kept distance all night because he felt straight away that even Abraham's arm punches and jabs were very heavy handed. I think Loma felt early on that he couldn't afford to get touched too much so stood off, kept trying to figure Lopez out, couldn't do it, kept trying to out-manouver him but Lopez footwork was too good.Last edited by Clegg; 10-19-2020, 01:22 PM.Comment
