Why is Roberto Duran forgiven for QUITTING

We talk about this fella like an ATG but the truth is he's just a quitting coward who's name should be stricken from the record books

Ain't no greater crime against the sport of boxing than QUITTING in that ring

He just needed a take a huge poop is a funny story I read somewhere once. Clearly not the only reason he quit, but probably had something to do with it if the writer was accurate with all the ridiculous food he listed Duran gorging upon. Can't find a link to it now but I remember something like immediately after the weigh in someone tossed him a g****fruit and he bit into it like an apple then began feasting on room service steaks or something of that nature. I'm too high and tired to find it now

Because he had so many other fights in which he show great courage and gameness. Nobody forgets he quit but he fought so many brave fights before and after he quit that most fans forgive that one bad night and remember him for all the good fights he had. Surely you must have done something in your life you regret. How would you like it if you were remembered only for the worst thing you ever did and nothing else?

Because Duran turned pro as a lightweight in 1968 and beat Iran Barkley to win a middleweight title in 1989, almost a full decade after the "No Mas" fight.

Here's the article I was talking about last night with the portion quoted I mentioned. Seems I remembered it fairly accurately haha (I have an incredible memory for a stoner)

            https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/articles-of...mas-my-version

As Duran triumphantly stepped off the scale, celebrating a moral victory over his weight, an entourage member tossed him a g****fruit. I will never forget the scene which followed.

Duran — a very hungry, dehydrated Duran — grabbed the g****fruit out of the air as if catching a baseball. Then, as if the g****fruit was an apple, Duran bit through its bitter, yellow skin. He ripped off a big chunk and swallowed it. Another big bite followed. The juice of the fruit spilled down his chin, but Duran just backhanded it away and took another bite. Within one minute, Duran had consumed the g****fruit — skin, pits and all! Another g****fruit followed. For this one, Duran wasn't as animlaistic. He actually ripped away some of the skin! A cup of hot broth was then handed to him. The starving welterweight champion drank it down as fast as he could. From there, Duran headed into the atrium dining area to down his first meal in two-and-one-half days. I was right behind him.

Duran's meal had already been ordered for him, so he didn't have to wait long before it arrived. I was at the next table. Never before — or since — have I seen such a ravenous display of eating.
A 16-ounce steak, along with a steaming baked potato, was put before the champion, along with a pitcher of g****fruit juice. Duran proceeded to cut off big hunks of sizzling steak and shove them into his mouth. The meat was so hot it burned his mouth, so he began washing it down — unchewed — with big gulps of fruit juice. Then he slit open the baked potato, quartered it and shoved that, too, burning hot, into his mouth. More fruit juice was required to cool his burning palate. When he was done with the steak and potato, Duran consumed a large salad. Naturally, he washed the salad down with a few more glasses of fruit juice. Then, astoundingly, incredibly, unbelievably…Duran ordered another 16-ounce steak, another baked potato and some more fruit juice. A lot more fruit juice.

As Duran gorged himself, I slowly ate my meal, finding it so hard to understand how a boxer — especially a world champion — could sit there and do what he was doing. And why. Of course, I, along with everybody else, had no idea what was going on inside Duran's mind, no idea that we were less than 12 hours away from sitting in on something quite the opposite of Duran-Leonard I.

              - -Why?

Why U ain't sued U parents for U subIQ and overly larded posterior?

He didn't quit, he refused a track meet and dismissed Leonard from the fight with a wave of his hand.

Why U boy Ray attack him from behind as Duran heads for his dressing room.

Ray a running coward U hero?

Like it or not Duran goes down in history as an all time great for the majority and AJ does not. You may not like that or agree with it but that is the way it is and there is nothing you can do about it. Duran fought so many great brave fights before and after he quit to Leonard that most fans forgive him even if you chose not to. In my opinion AJ never quit but Duran is a better fighter than AJ PFP by a mile or two.

Because he redeemed himself with his further gutsy performances. It was the weirdest quit ever still. He easily could've done more to try to come back into it as he wasn't far behind on the cards.
