I don’t even know how much it is a month now, but the level of fights you get for free is ridiculous, everything is on ppv and even those cards are usually filled with mismatches.

I’m sure it was Groves v froch that had Andy lee on the undercard in a 6 round fight against some guy who was about 50/1 against him. Reminded me of the weekly wwf shows that had a big name fighter beat up a fat can like iron mike wolf as filler before the main event.

I wouldn’t buy a car off Hearn or Warren, but you are correct to differentiate between them. Warren can be duplicitous toad but I do get the impression he loves the sport. I used to subscribe to boxnation and the main difference was they used to pull out all the stops to get the fights that hardcore boxing fans were salivating over like Marquez v Vasquez or Rios v Alvarado, something that sky didn’t bother with because it wouldn’t attract enough casuals to make financial sense.

The other thing I’ll give frank his due for, was that launching a boxing only channel was massively detrimental to him as a promoter. A lot of his stable left him because they wanted more mainstream exposure and wanted the Ricky Hatton style nationwide following that you could only attain from being on a platform like sky sports rather than a purely boxing subscription channel.
    Completely agree mate great post...

Sky’s subscription’s are mainly driven by football. Boxing is of little to no importance to them and never has been. Completely agree about Boxnation too was a great platform for boxing fans and consistently televised good international content.

Warren actually spent £10 million of his own money to launch Boxnation after Sky looked to remove boxing from their product portfolio after the disastrous Haye-Harrison (co-promoted by Hearn ) and Klitschko-Haye PPV’s.

After Frank launched Boxnation, Sky suddenly had a competitor in the market and reinvested in boxing. Hatton was caught snorting coke and Maloney was in the process of becoming a transgender woman so that only left them with Matchroom who were gifted the Sky contract. This allowed them to sign guys like Froch, Brook, Groves, DeGale, Bellew, Cleverly all of which had previously been with either Warren or Hennessy, and they have been damaging boxing in this country ever since.

Bob Arum is 100% right. Its a disgrace that the biggest fight of the year so far has been ignored by Sky (and BT but they are putting on) in favour of the joke output from matchroom. Adam Smith is in Hearns pocket and it shows.

Matchroom do market excellently to the casual fanbase, and are able to draw in general audiences, Frank I don't think understands the Internet age, he's an old school promoter and doesn't have the reach of Eddie.

But the idea that if you watch matchroom cards you must be a "casual" and not a real boxing fan is just nonsense, the elitism is quite pathetic.

I enjoy cards from both sides but I understand Frank is better off putting his fights on regular BT sports as he will get more cash that way, he can't promote Duboius vs Joyce to do decent PPV numbers as neither is a name fighter.

It's a lot of bluster and the idea that Frank isn't all about the money and is in it to give back to "real fans" is absoloutley hilarious. He's just as crooked and greedy as Hearn he's just not as successful at it.
          Good post.

The thing is you are confusing what Hearn is culpable for with what sky has control over.

Hearn doesn't have anything to do with getting fights he's not rooting onto sky, in fact as far as I know sky signed an exclusivity deal with him.

Hearn also has no control over where sky assigns its budgets

Again 95% of the sky sports budget goes on football, which is why the big fights end up on PPV because they don't account for the fees for mega fights out of the budget and have to generate extra revenue.

Not really, he put a lot of his personal money into the fight camp series to keep boxing going.

Rupert Murdoch is the worst of them all and owns Sky, what do you expect?

Sky sports is for the casuals and is a business, not a charity. Sky will do what makes sense business wise and it is their right to do so. Very few people in the UK care about Lomachenko. Hardly anyone in the UK has even heard of Lopez.

I agree that quite a lot of Sky's PPV's aren't worth paying for but all US PPV's aren't worth the price they charge either.
