I wouldn't say he "took" Davis to the 12th, he survived to the 12th he was non-competitive for that entire fight.
He also got stopped by Robinson Castellanos.
If you even rewatch only the second round of that Davis fight, you would see that Gamboa wanted to quit in the second round. The ref (I think it was Jack Reiss) wasn't having it and saw through Gamboa. I respect Reiss, no fake quits. It continued. If he twisted his foot, it's a part of the game. Otherwise, he had to tell the ref he quit (which his face did, but he didn't wanna say that and be known for that).
The point for Davis was not to kill Gamboa, until Gamboa got brave. It ended in stoppage after 3 KDs. What else do people want?
I'm picking Gamboa in this fight, a minority opinion.
Gamboa isn't dealing with someone like Davis. I think Haney is mostly featherfisted. Gamboa right now is at least 5 times better than Haney's last opponent.
Gamboa was exposed YEARS ago. Then Crawford established that. I like Gamboa and really glad he is getting these pay days but he shouldn't have got the Tank fight, let alone Haney after.
To be honest, I didn't take the Covid situation into consideration so it is good that Haney is at least staying busy.
But Gamboa has too many things going against him. Coming off a loss, pushing 40, been past his best days since at least 5 years ago. He is a name, he just doesn't present much of a challenge at all.
Well, let's just hope Haney does what he's supposed to do and stop Gamboa more impressively than Tank did.
I'd much rather him right someone more of a challenge as well....
