Very true. But in the 6 months he trained before the fight, he got back down to his fighting weight of around 225. He looked good but his skills were of no use against Johnson, an all time great.

      The Cinderella Man

I think it was Jim Braddock over Max Baer. He came from getting social assistance to win the heayweight title. Admittedly Baer literally threw it away, but Braddock had beaten the top contenders and defended for 2 years before losing to Joe Louis.

Historically there were 3 fights. Jack Johnson over Tommy Burns (and later the Great White Hope, Jim Jeffries) ...AND last, but certainly not least, Joe Louis over Max Schmeling.

Nobody in boxing today can have any idea of what it meant. It lasted less than a round but still reverberates down through history. It was a victory of good (Louis) over evil (Hitler)..Louis was not then a negro boxer, he was a representative of the World -and only incidentally the World Heavyweight Champion. .

I'd like to add that a few of Sugar Ray Robinson's welterweight fights could be considered here. Ted "Kid" Lewis also would have some fights considered. He had hundreds of fights; at 14 years old, fought at flyweight, (twice world welterweight champ) and went all the way up to fighting even heavyweights, although never much more than a 5'7" welterweight. Even fought for the world light-heavyweight title against Carpentier.
Boxing experts voted him the Best British fighter of th 20th century.

          - -Smokin' Joe didn't just beat Ali, he knocked the snot outta him.

          Roy Green and Popkins shlt.

Foreman DKing first promo and had the filthiest of the dirtiest prefight backgrounds from the loose ropes by Dundee and Bundini to the drugging of George after literally being held hostage in one of the murderous Mugabe and that just for starters.

Even the Ring was built over one of the most tortuous, murderous dungeons in the world not to mention George beat the count.

That's OK since he only lost a battle but won the WAR!

Honorable Mention is Manny emasculating and humiliating the ducking and shucking TUE 51-0 for 6 years such that JoyBoy had a nervous breakdown and had to be isolated in the bighouse to protect him from the inmates while he received counseling...priceless!

"The Boxing Expert Grand Master Super Grade".

There is no higher Grade or I'd be in it.

What grade will YOU be in when you leave elementary school in three-or is it four-years time??

What a childish view of boxing, history, and humanity you have. Are you really this brainwashed by 80 year old wartime propaganda?

I think this, Duran over Leonard or Marquez over Pacquiao.

It’s gotta be Duran vs Leonard for me too. Just incredible stuff.

Duran had been rated number one for a long time, but leading up to that fight, people did have Leonard higher simply because Duran had not looked very good at 147 in the couple years before their fight, except against Palomino. Most assumed he’d lost a step due to the weight gain and fighting bigger guys.

the Hopkins that lost to RJJ would still be considered green by todays standards.
