Thanks for the info, man, I hadn't heard that one, but it's a fairly safe bet that most Nicaraguan boxers have similar stories. I did a little digging into boxers per capita awhile back and Nicaragua came out with strikingly high numbers so I read up a coupla articles and it seems like boxing's often seen as a route out of poverty. Missed the Chocolatito story though.

EDIT: Gotta spread the karma a little first it seems.

Yeah Nicaragua is a very poor country, there’s some sort of crazy stat that 1/3 of their population live on less than 2 dollars a day or something along the lines of that. Crazy man...

Maravilla was not raised in poverty. Just a working class family that didn't have money but not as poor as he made it seem. I've seen pictures.

Thanks for the heads up, man, 'dirt poor' rural was what I saw, but I'm sure these things can get exaggerated.

You can see some poverty here for sure:

But I've seen a picture of him as a teenager, and he doesn't seem that poor anymore. You can check that one on his instagram.

But yeah Argentina had and has some poverty... our working class will sometime have an average salary of 1000 usd per month, and other times only 300. Our money fluctuates a lot and we have many economic crisis.

Yeah I heard that story when he was coming up the ranks.

Edwin Valero was poor in Venezuela and was a part of a huge street gang growing up. He was doing coke when he was a young kid.

He was a good boxer but he had too many demons
