Chocolatito was very poor. He learnt how to box by wearing his dads rubber work gloves and by filling a milk sack with sand and hanging it from a guava tree as a heavy bag.

His dad was a former boxer but never made ends meet so had to go door to door selling cleaning products in Managua.
