    Who is Abass Baraou???

    ???

    Ha Ha...

OK so I only even heard of this kid because he's fighting Jack Culcay and I was looking for a fight to put in this weeks Pick Em. Naturally I assumed that Culcay would be a massive favourite, cos this is a dude who's been in with some real quality... gave Boo Boo his toughest fight in recent years (maybe ever), competitive with D'Chenko and Sulecki... guy's a proven world level operater even if he's fallen a little short at the highest level...
So OK Abass was a 3/1 (+300) dog on Tues which kinda piqued my interest cos that's pretty close for a complete unknown against a world class contender level guy... thing is I didn't look what the odds were doing again until today when I found that somehow this unknown kid is now a 1/3 favourite against the veteran Culcay and I'm thinking...

So just who is this kid?

Well best I can tell his parents were Togolese immigrants and Abass himself was born in Southern Germany but spent his childhood in Togo, nice article about him here:

Shortly after the boxing world came together in celebrating a masterful performance from the once-fallen Julian Williams, a young fighter basing himself in Germany has been quietly plotting a stunning ascent to meet ‘J-Rock’ and his fellow world champions, at the top of the light-middleweight division. From humble beginnings in one of West Africa’s smaller […]

As an amateur representing Germany he won Gold Medal in the 2017 European Championships at Welterweight and Bronze in the same year at the World Championships.

As a pro he's now 9(6) - 0 with his most notable wins coming over faded but still tricky Carlos Molina (when he was 4 - 0) and the ancient Ali Funeka, so Culcay represents a pretty damn big step up, but yet Sauerland - and now the bookies - seem to have huge confidence in him. Is it justified? Well I'm guessing we're gonna find out in just a few hours.

Kid seems to have some pretty nice moves though, however he looks tonight... it's just possible we're gonna have someone else to look out for at 154 in a short while.

You know what man, the odds really surprised me when I seen you listed them in the Pick Em thread. I expected Culcay to be a slight favourite but seeing Barou was 3/1 made me wonder whether it was worth putting a few quid on him and then hoping the odds would significantly decrease enough to lay the bet. I couldn’t find the odds on any of the sites I use though.

It happened with Ball vs Courtenay the other week. I had £200 on Ball at 5/2 and by the time of the fight Courtenay was Evs, so I could essentially cover my bet guaranteeing myself £300 minus a 10er to cover the draw.

This obviously would have been a perfect opportunity to do the same, as Culcay will likely be around 2/1 now. Gutted I missed it...

FTR, I think Culcay will have too much experience for him, I think he’ll win by UD.

There's been a couple like that recently - few weeks ago one of the Picks Ems swung around while I was off camping and caught me on the hop, but I can't recall any swing this big... complete switcharound from 3/1 to 1/3. Effing insane.

Honestly my head's telling me Culcay too, his experience counts for a lot and Baraou didn't look too clever against shot2shit King Carlos last year... but Ima roll the dice on the youngster for the puposes of the Pick Em. I'm thinking that bookies ain't ****** and just maybe somebody knows something.

I’ve just changed my pick to Barou too, purely because of the x2 multiplier being available when the guy is a considerable favourite. All things being even though I’d go with Culcay.

I’m sure I watched Barou on an undercard, Taylor-Prograis maybe, he looks solid but Culcay is the far more proven fighter. Interesting matchup...
