Berchelt has said he wants to set the record for most defenses by a Mexican at 130lbs and I think he needs 3 or 4 more.
Herring v Frampton has been in the pipeline for since last Autumn and they were hoping for it to be in Belfast, in a stadium = more money. Herring wanted that fight because it represented a career high payday and with UK ppv money probably more than what he could have made v Berchelt as that would not have been ppv. I think Bob Arum has purposely kept Herring and Berchelt apart this past year, so Berchelt can make defenses and Herring get that career high payday. Berchelt would have beaten Valdez by now and probably made another mandatory if not for Covid.
Bob also knows that there's a real chance that Herring loses to Frampton and that Frampton, at the end of his career and chasing legacy fights, would have no problem with immediately attempting to unify with Berchelt. I think Berchelt beats both Herring and Frampton but he's been stopped before so it's not like they don't have a chance. Also if Frampton were to beat Herring I can see him also going straight in for a unification against Jojo Diaz as both are also represented by MTK. If Frampton beat both Herring and Diaz we could see him drop the WBO rather than fight mandatory Shakur Stevenson, and that would still set up a unification with Berchelt. In the meantime Berchelt makes a couple more defenses of his WBC belt like how he wants to do.
Interesting times ahead at 130.
