Have DAZN screwed themselves with the Canelo deal?

The number I have seen thrown about lately is "$40M per fight". That is the pot for Canelo and his opponent, and the various other fees. The initial reports of Canelo's DAZN deal quoted "5 years, 11 fights, $365M MINIMUM", which works out around $33.18M per fight. Either way those numbers are astronomical. I would be interested to see if anybody has any other figures, with proof.

Now, assuming those numbers above are correct, Canelo is 3 fights and 2 years into this deal. Another 3 years, and 8 fights to go. Since this contract was agreed we had the "Mexican beef" nonsense, and the global pandemic, hurting Canelo's reputation and Boxing's earning potential for the forseeable.

We see him linked with these "gimme" opponents, more and more as of late. Opponents nobody wants to see Canelo fighting, and DAZN have been taking a hardened stance when presented with these opponents as options. They simply will not agree to staging these fights. Jason Quigley, Avni Yildirim, Jaime Mungaia, Spike O'Sullivan being some names I can remember off the top of my head who DAZN rejected.

So what happens from here? Does Canelo get forced to take on a top opponent? Does he sit out the contract and refuse to take the tougher fights? Does he get his way and take gimme fights? Does he get these gimme fights but earn less money? Anybody know? Personally I would only like to see Canelo facing the best out there from here-in, there's no interest to see him knocking over patsys. It is refreshing to see DAZN taking the same stance.

He could call BJS bluff on a potential free fight in England..

Decent opponent, chance for DAZN to hit the English market. Everything going for everyone involved in calling that call out in....

As it stands it's increasingly looking like one has to bite the bullet or go separate ways.. I can't see it being Canelo with the money on offer...

I'm wondering if DAZN are kicking themselves at the idiocy in trying to take over too soon...

DAZN and Canelo need to end their agreement IMO. Canelo is better off on PPV and DAZN is better off doing weekly cards with their British guys and making AJ their top guy.

To show up and protest this injustice and unfair pot like they did for Lomachenko vs Lopez.

Just sitting here waiting for them because they're "boxing fans" who hate unfairness.

LeBron James gets paid $37M to play 6 preseason games, 82 regular season games, plus the postseason. Canelo gets paid the same to fight for one night, typically as the overwhelming favorite.

Boxing pay is dumb. No one watches the sport, no one knows the competitors, yet they still get paid what they do. And on top of that, we rarely get even odds fights. What a pathetic sport.

There's a reason for Canelo signing with DAZN. He gets a series of guaranteed paydays, with the lone stipulation of selling Hearn on his opponents. As for PPV, we know he won't take on all prime top contenders and ODLH won't offer them top dollar. Has the name Charlo even crossed his lips?
