Comments Thread For: Hearn: I'm Almost Certain That Canelo's First Choice is Callum Smith

Eddie Hearn, promoter for WBA super middleweight Callum Smith, feels very confident that his boxer is frontrunner to face Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Several other names have been mentioned in recent weeks - including David Lemieux, John Ryder and even Jason Quigley.

Callum Smith is a fraud if he prices himself out of this fight.

If the terms proposed include the usual weight restrictions, Smith should walk. It’s a fight if love to see and I’d probably favor Canelo anyway but I just don’t want to see another weight drained opponent.

Smith is who 90% on this board been saying Canelo was ducking. Imho almost any champ at 168 or 160 are equally accomplished or difficult.(& Some less difficult but not by much, all this being on paper obviously) most the fighters calling Canelo out don't wanna sign because of being with rival outfits & being worried o losing for cheap.

Theyll have to stack an undercard and payout crappy to the undercard fighters to make this fight possible. Flyweights & bantums would fit the bill.

This one has me torn. I think Smith should face Benavidez, but not before either one has taken care of Plant first, and the winner gets the payday in Canelo. I favour Canelo to beat them both. However, Canelo should continue to grow his brand abroad. He does have a lot of money to make for DAZN, for which he needs an international fanbase. But if I have to pick, I would say fight Smith. Canelo would win, and the story would be engaging with a revenge angle of Smith avenging the pounding his brother Liam took.

It's your job to help sort it Eddie...

If you're accepting less money than you think you're entitled then make sure you get compensated with no weight draining restrictions.. They will want it all in their favour.....

Both need to Make compromises and get the fight sorted.... or move on.

The way Smith looked against Ryder this is no surprise. BJS might not beat Canelo but would present many more problems and would make for a better contest.
