Hatton definitely needed a Robert Byrd type ref (and when Kovalev fought Ward the first time he could have used a Cortez type). But that's boxing, a champ is a guy who wins despite the ref.

Even if Hatton was 'allowed' to do his grappling tactics, it wouldn't have worked. Key things:

1-Hatton was fighting outside of his weightclass, he did not have the strength advantage he normally had at his actual weight. Floyd knew this.

2-Floyd was secretly one of the physically strongest boxers in the entire sport. People were fooled by his flashy and skilled style but the man was a beast on the inside. Floyd knew this as well.

So Hatton was never gonna win this fight.

We all know that the ref didn’t want Hatton to be able to get close and maul Floyd but we all saw Floyd picking Hatton off for most of the fight.

Hatton was unfairly penalised by the ref and Floyd was turning his back to force fouls but i still think the outcome would have been the same.

Translation - if I was Dillian Whyte with a bent ref letting me do whatever I want, I would have done better

Hatton was a huge hero in England. He had a hold and hit style which is legal in mma but not boxing. Most of his fights were in England where the referees let him do whatever he pleased. When Cortez would not let him hold Mayweather with one hand and hit with the other hand he said Cortez cheated him but he didn't. He just made Hatton follow the rules of boxing and did not allow him to use illegal holding while hitting tactics. Fighting at close range or infighting is legal. Holding a man with one hand while pounding away with the other hand is not legal. Hatton was famous for it and earned the nick name hold and hit Hatton.

                    • I wanted you to win Ricky, but I didn't like all your wrestling shti so I felt Cortez was right to encourage an actual boxing match first and foremost. After round 4/5, Floyd was picking you off at will and that's where you fell short - don't blame Joe Cortez. You were lucky that you had a lenient ref vs Tszyu because had it been Joe that night you would have lost to Tszyu's far superior skills.
I wish you'd keep it real and you're not doing that.
