Holmes was not totally shot. He did well in the fight before the last round. Watch it again. Holmes would have beaten a lot of top ten guys. But Tyson was peak prime, Tyson was all time great prime vs Holmes. Holmes didn't have enough to sustain his best level for the whole 12 rounds. Tyson eventually caught up to him and finished the job quickly. For Tyson it was a masterpiece. For Holmes it was frustrating because if he was ten years younger it would have been an incredible fight.

Saw the fight live in AC at Trump casino. Was part of the crowd shouting LARRY! LARRY! while danced and jabbed around the ring.
Out of respect, Tyson let him have his moment, and then turned out the lights.

The Holmes era is a different era and non of the current guys is good enough even to tie their shoe laces. Take the Holmes jab alone or the movement and the defence, no comparison.

The Easton Assassin was a great champ without doubt, but I remember him winning the title from Ken Norton in a 15 round war and he held that title until he was 48-0 before losing to Michael Spinks. He was past his prime by this time of course. I don't remember him being a "multiple times champion" or whatever was stated at the beginning of this article. He held the title for a long time. I may be wrong but I don't think so. The Ali he beat was far beyond his prime and should never have taken this fight. The Ali of the mid-sixties beats all others IMHO. He could deliver a KO punch while backing up.

Good Article. Mohammed Ali was 38 and Larry Holmes was in his prime at 31. Ali was a boxer who wanted to fight the best before he retired and that's why it was billed as "The Last Hurrah"

Now days boxers waiting for good boxers to age and then challenge them when they know they can win.

Holmes was referring to form more so the complete package. Technique is useless if not implemented 100%. Holmes had a completely different style.

Holmes is more deluded than he is overrated. Tyson Fury would toy with him.

Hate to say it but Ken Norten in his hey day would beat all these heavyweights now...Norten could eat a punch and show nuff give one, just as ernie shavers,Big George was to big to strong ,and Champ...ALI.. in his 20s would be to illusive to hit but can Hit you from all angles...

It is going backwards in boxing.

The talent pool is much smaller and the knowledge pool of trainers and gyms has all but vanished.

Sports medicine and nutrition advancements are many, but actual boxing acumen and instruction is a shell of what it was in the golden eras. Boxing isn't growing like the NFL or NBA. It's shrunk drastically even accounting for more euro participation.
