Is Gennady Golovkin Overrated or Underrated?

Yo Curt.
Still waiting on your list that proves GGG is a bum. You know, how you claimed "it's all relative" and ****.
You think GGG is good now though huh? but also feel its necessary to call him a ****ing bum too so which is it?
You tell me cuz I've been waiting for all those MW who are better than GGG during his career. Been waiting since what, 2 or 3 days ago? Which is SO ****ING FUNNY
So what kind of guys did GGG avoid huh? Please present that list too. Because I'm dying to see how many names are on it.
Yeah cuz all GGG does well is jab
Nothing about his
Timing
Chin
Workrate
Stamina
Power
Ability to cut off the ring
Its so funny seeing you try and talk boxing. If what you said is true then Canelo would have adapted his plan in the first fight where anyone with a brain and who wasnt bought saw him lose wide. You think it would have been smart to bring that plan again?
****. No one believed that Canelo would bring the fight to GGG even his biggest fangirls. They all believed that he did enough to WIN/DRAW the first time.
Canelos best shot was ALWAYS to bring the fight to GGG because GGG is susceptible to combinations. Look at all the fighters GGG has "struggled" with.
And guess what Canelos best punch is? His lead hook. Lead hooks dont counter jabs. You wanna talk about "body shots" how many of those do you think were lead hooks?
Canelos plan was to break down GGG with body shots so hopefully he could land something more meaningful. And why wouldnt you do that when you are the fighter with superior hand speed and reflexes.
Come on Curt. You got to do better than that.
Make beleive doesnt translate into actual boxing.Comment

Great post. Canelo's fight plan was all wrong. His corner could see exactly what you said and was telling him to get off the ropes. Then Sanchez who is supposed to be the master planner eggs Canelo on to fight the rematch where he was the most effective, in the center of the ring. For crying out loud what was he thinking.
The answer after the first fight was yes. Yeah they hurt but he didnt get overwhelmed like everyone else.
Imagine you're GGG in the 2nd fight. The whole time you trained to fight Canelo the same way you did the first time and he comes out with a COMPLETELY different game plan. I watched a lot of what came out with GGG and Sanchez and they were training to deal with Canelo moving.
Problem then became Sanchez had no answer. He literally kept telling GGG to go forward and fight the younger, faster fighter, in a battle of short range which is NOT GGGs best range.
GGGs best range is mid range right at the end of his jab. Like most Euro fighters GGG does not excell at infighting. Canelo isnt that great either but having faster hands and combinations. Big plus.
So what did GGG do? GGG began to box which I think suprised a lot of people including myself. Most forward going pressure fighters dont do good fighting on their back foot but GGG did GREAT. IMO there were many times where GGG was out boxing Canelo.
I I that Canelo just recieved the benefit of the doubt. He won the narrative and for many people that was good enough.
Anyone who follows GGG knows exactly why GGG dropped Abel. Abel did GGG wrong and GGG knew it too. The key to success wasnt to try and bully Canelo (the one from the second fight) but to outbox and outwork Canelo. Thing is though when a boxer enters training camp they train for specific things theyll do or see. HIGHLY doubt sanchez was forcing GGG to box so great to see him fall back on his amateur background.
That's why he went with Banks too. He wanted Banks to teach him to box which IMO I dont really agree with. I get what he wants to do but I dont think Banks is the guy and I think it's a little late too. He doesn't need to drastically change his style, just add a little more movement.
He still highly effective but needs someone who is a great planner. Well executed game plans can win fights and that's what GGG needs.Comment

He both at the same time.....
He overrated cuz he was hyped too much while fighting bums etcm
Underrated cuz he has the skills and end up getting good fights at the end of his career and gave Canelo 2 controversial fights.Comment

put it this way...
all of that... " anyone from 154-168 "... talk, was garbage
all of that... " Golovkin knocks out heavyweights "... talk, was garbage
all that... " Golovkin will destroy Canelo "... talk, was garbage
all of that... " Golovkin would beat Hagler, Hopkins, Monzon "... talk, was garbage
the fact is, despite all of that bullshlt... and despite all of those promises... and despite the fact that in this very thread even Golovkin fans admit that he underachieved and does not have a great resume... Golovkin fell short of HIS OWN hype... so yea, he was over-rated

I remember when he fought Postol in his USA debut. At the time he was hyped up and got lots of credit for the stoppage win. Rightfully so. But watching it back last week for the first time since, I could notice the flaws that are glaring today. He blocked punches with his face even back then. He also missed a lot. He really just pushes forward without setting much up. I thought I’d see good skills that have since eroded today but not so much. Canelo’s talent wise is way ahead of what ggg was at 30yrs old. GGG can take and give a punch, but he really doesn’t add any other wrinkles to his skill set.Comment

Also dont forget his amateur career over 300 fights will take there toll on the body, just the grind of training for that many bouts is intense for a long time, GGG is on the verge of being worn out, over all he has done a lot in the sport.Comment

agree totally....and that 2nd fight was the type of fight he begged canelo to fight...canelo happily obliged him
going into the first fight i believe canelo was giving golovkin credit and the benefit of the doubt that he was as strong and good as advertised...and in the 2nd fight he was not afraid of anything golovkin could do to him...i think he bought into the myth and then realized it just wasnt that true
i do believe golovkin is good....but he got by beating up guys like curtis stevens...who lost to legit d level club fighters....
the golovkin super fans swear that jab, which as you mentioned was really all he did well, is some measure of immense success.....in boxing youre gonna have to give/give up something to get something....what punch do you think canelo would want golovkin to be throwing? and alot of? my guess is he would want golovkin throwing jabsComment
