Well HBO wasn't going to extend his contract if he didn't fight Kovalev at the end of the 3 fight deal. So, while he didn't "have to" fight him, what was he going to do? sit out and wait for something better? go to Showtime? go on a fight by fight basis? Yes, props to him for taking the fights because sure, no one has to do anything. He was fortunate to get 2 wins against him and chose to dip out and retire. I am still a bit curious myself where Andre suddenly got acne marks on his back for the rematch though.
