Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has tabbed WBO featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson as the future of boxing. Stevenson collected a silver medal in the bantamweight division at the 2016 Olympic Games. A unanimous decision victory over Joet Gonzalez last time out secured the vacant WBO belt in just his 13th fight.

As long as anyone is signed to Arum the former slave trader, they’re all great and superstars

Even though this is the typical Arum pitch, I’ll bite

He looks good but has Malignaggi level power at his first weight class.

The first real star division for him is likely to be Lightweight, two divisions north of where he’s at now. Unless he develops some snap to his punches from somewhere, I really can’t see how he’s going to compete at top tier level in higher weight classes. Staying at 126 and 130 isn’t going to produce the next big thing

The stars of yesterday all had power in their first weight classes, becoming stars at higher weight classes. Floyd had little power at 147, especially 154 but at 130 he was savage. I can’t see how this will work with Stevenson, and I don’t see the allure required to tear up the rule book and change history
