Comments Thread For: Roach on Training Mike Tyson: Before End of Career, His Heart Wasn't Really In It

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach had trained heavyweight great Mike Tyson at the tail-end of his career. When Tyson was getting himself ready to fight Clifford Etienne in early 2003, Roach remember that he was very injury prone. Tyson retired from the sport in 2005, after getting stopped by heavyweight journeyman Kevin McBride.

Most probably THE greatest ever case of "coulda".

His potential was huge, but it got depressingly wasted. He became an icon notwithstanding; imagine the magnitude of his figure today had he not joined Don King.

I always forget they worked together, Tyson and Roach.

Burn out city in terms of fights and lifestyle in such a short space..

My fav boxer of all time..

I wonder what the new Mike would say to the Old Mike? Most likely "do exactly the same because I'm still having a blast"

If Mike is training for exhibition fights for charity then good luck to him.Anything else would be ridiculous and dangerous.

Well, what should Lennox do? His career's highlights read as follows:

                1) Beating up the "drugged corpse" version of Tyson.
                2) Being robbed via a draw (first Holyfield fight).
                3) Being knocked out by McCall and winning the rematch against the latter's "crying addict" version, without even finding a way to knock him down in the process.
                4) Being knocked out by Rahman and winning the rematch via his lone genuine "highlight punch" of an entire career.
                5) Being given hell by Frank Bruno before finding a Hail Mary punch to bail him out.
                6) Being given hell by Mercer.
                7) Being knocked around the ring by Klitschko before opening a day-saving cut with a punch.

Oh, right, I forgot - he destroyed Golota and Grant. But was almost knocked down by Briggs...

Seriously: all in all, Lewis' finest moment might very well be his KO win against Razor Ruddock.

You forget, Lewis remains the only fighter in history to have successfully avenged his KO losses with knockouts and the only fighter to rematch every opponent he ever lost to.

                  Time will tell on Wilder.
                  Joshua danced.
                  Manny ducked.
                  Leonard danced.
                  Duran ducked.
                  Chocolatito ducked.
                  Hamed retired in shame.
                  Porter ducked.
                  Spinks retired in shame.
                  Golovkin preferred a soft touch.
Mikey fought others for gift wins.
                  Broner ducked.
                  Quillin ducked.
Jacobs would have if Pirog hadn't retired.

                  On and on.

You may not think much of that accolade but getting knocked out tends to make you question yourself. It's why guys getting praised for 'eye test' are at risk, because they've not fought true threats yet to know how they handle it.

I'd agree with your point without problems, but you can't seriously consider the McCall rematch as a genuine fight.
