Comments Thread For: Lightweights Must Fight Their Way To Greatness

By Tris Dixon - It will be 40 years ago in July since the late Matthew Saad Muhammad and perineal title challenger Yaqui Lopez shared 14 wild rounds in New Jersey's Playboy Club. For many, it was 1980's Fight of the Year. The always miraculous Saad was being swarmed in round eight, taking a beating and being leathered by every shot in the brilliant Lopez's...

I love boxing. But please follow in the footsteps of ufc. Have one champ and the best fight the best. Boxing could be the greatest sport in the world if the bull**** stops. Takes way to long to make a mega fight when they could have one or two every month if the promoters would get their head out of their asses and realize that. Everyone would benefit

What great boxer has Loma fought at lightweight or anywhere? Linares? What's his defining fight? Answer? None. So sad.

By the way, all need to prove themselves, not just the lightweights.

Lightweight division is rich with content and personalities just like the welterweight division.

But it may just end up being a diva division if they won't fight another just like the welterweight division for a couple of years. The welterweight division only started getting interesting when they actually started fighting each other. But unfortunately, covid killed all the momentum away.

Dont use Ryan Garcia as a measuring stick for this talented division, who has Ryan Garcia beat that is any good to evoke such a insane demand from that hype-job?

And BTW, the youngsters mentioned in this piece ( Lopez, Haney ) are going to be fighting at jr. welter, they are not going to make 135 great. Vasily Lomachenko or Gervonta Davis are the only ones that can make a mark in the history books of this weight class considering they appear to have maxed their ability to climb the scales any further.

Glad, at least, someone is talking about one of the primary faults in 21st Century boxing. Good write-up, because it nailed the truth of the matter. Great needs Great to be remembered as Great; and there's only one place that can be decided.....and it ain't social media.

And yet when the welterweight conversation comes up you'll still get idiots on this site defending the decision to wait with matchups like Spence - Crawford for "business" purposes. Look who's at 147, and what HASN'T been made. Sad really, when an article like this puts everything in perspective.

It's an infection of perception. Those of us who remember when the best actually fought the best are forced to suffer through excuses filed by so-call fans under the au****es of "actual reasons".

Fighters' managers don't even need to do their jobs anymore.....fanboys do it for them.
