The most fascinating subplot prior to the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight was whether Mayweather's father would train De La Hoya for it. Well, one shouldn't train someone against your own son, but yeah. If the decision of the judges went De La Hoya's way, I have no qualms with that. It was that close, and the general feeling at the end of the fight was that Oscar won. If you scored for Floyd, it's also acceptable.

Was it really the general feeling? I remember a close fight that i wanted de la hoya to win and i remember some people like Floyd Sr saying something like ”if the goal is to land most punches then Oscar is the winner”.

But i dont remember it being the general feeling that Oscar won. I think most people had Floyd as the winner of a really close fight. I think i had it 7-5 for Floyd.

Olympic Gold Medal's over time have never devalued 'They gain prestige with time'. Where as boxing world championship belts seemed to have devalued over time.

Oscar De La Hoya has pretty much achieved everything to the maximum.

I think Oscar reached his peak with that style against Fernando Vargas. He didn’t default into his usual squaring up style - with his head leaning forward to be hit.

It would’ve been a different fight with Mayweather Jr. had Oscar paid that money. It probably would’ve turned into a very boring chess match.

Nevertheless, I thought Oscar would’ve benefitted big time if he focused on that style exclusively. It looked like a good fit from an excellent teacher.
