How many people have you turned into boxing fans?

Boxing’s fans are lucky to have found or been shown the way. You have to pay it forward in order for the sport to survive or flourish.

Over the years I’ve netted 3 people. I would invite them over for what I knew would be an exciting fight and I’d teach them everything a beginner should know. The lessons would become more advanced over time and I’d start showing them classic fights. They are now what I’d call hardcore.

Not a one. I did ensure Ms Koba would never ever go to another boxing match by taking her to watch Saunders fight Andy Lee early in our courtship amidst the heady miasma of few thousand *****s and scousers.

The view was poor and the action worse and her abiding memory seems to have been the stink of beer and testosterone. I rather enjoyed it, but she hasn't responded well when I've suggested she give it another try...

The few other people I talk boxing IRL with are mainly gym or BJJ guys who box as well, but they were all already into it.

I wouldn’t invite a first timer to a fight unless the view is awesome and the fight itself is guaranteed to be a barn burner. First impressions are everything.

You got to ease people into it while keeping it fun, informative and maybe down the road, profitable. It’s not easy. Almost feels closer to recruiting teens for the army than it does to introducing them to a sport.

If you’re doing it right then it is a job as you’re shielding them from the Pacquiao-Mayweathers while inviting them over for the Toney-Jirovs. You teach them everything you can without coming off as preachy and then tell them where to get boxing news and where to read up on the history with book recommendations.
All done over steak and beers.

I had a group of friends in college I’m still friends with that used to get together for many fights. We’d split a PPV, go in on some beers and food and have a good time.
Now most of them watch UFC over boxing.
We had a fight party for Canelo/Kov but pretty much everyone was there to watch the UFC fight. No one knew boxing was on that night.

Hahaha I was at that fight- was probably one of the scousers you bumped into.😂 You had a few scousers on the card so a few hundred probably travelled.

I remember there were loads of travellers there that night though you had Lee, BJS and Jimmy Kelly all from travelling backgrounds, so not that surprising really.

My missus is a begrudgingly a boxing fan, she’ll happily travel to fights if she gets a free holiday out of it but I don’t think she’s ever joined me at the Liverpool Olympia for an MTK show.😂

I have a funny story like yours though. A friend of mine was going on a city break with his girlfriend and cause I’m quite well traveled he asked me if I’d been or if it was worth visiting anywhere. I hadn’t been to Riga but I realised there was a WBSS boxing event whilst he was there. It was Breidis vs Mike Perez. My mate is more of a casual but he does enjoy boxing and he’d actually gone to Bellew-Flores with me were Breidis was on the undercard, so I managed to convince him to go.

Anyway cut a long story short him and his girl had to sit through 12 rounds of Briedis fouling surrounded by ultra passionate Latvian hooligans. Needless to say he was fuming with me.🤣

Zero, and it's still my #1 regardless of whether I can bring anyone into the fold, or even keep up with it with people I know are boxing people.

There's a retired pro from my city that's fought some big names, I run into him from time to time in my neighborhood, and he doesn't follow the game at all. His biggest beef? Hardly anybody fights each other, some do, most don't.

Ha ha, it wasn't a bad evening all in, genuinely surprised it didn't kick off worse though there were a coupla minor scuffles as I recall.

Tell you what man, I ain't been out to the fights since the lil'un was born back in '17, so I reckon I'm due - funds permitting. When all this COVID stuff's run it's course and the world gets back to something like normal PM me when you find yourself coming over Manchester for a fight next time and maybe see about meeting up.

I had 10 people convinced and then I sent them to the NSB WPage.

All of them are watching ballet or skiing or anything else after reading a few posts here.

I've tried. Seems like these days the closest young fans are to a combat sport is MMA because of all the free exposure they get on tv with a lot of free events.

I had a buddy from HS that never liked boxing, eventually got into it just to be apart of the group with my other friend whose a boxing fanatic, but he eventually just faded away. He never was truly a fan but just pretending to be part of the group so he could hang out and have something to do.

True boxing fans are a dying breed.
