Funny thing is like you I been deeply critical of Golovkin at times - in fact I've probably criticised him more than any other fighter, precisely cos am I am a fan so I feel I got the right. Monroe was with Banner so kinda nonaligned at the time and had also like Mora won a televised tourney although the Boxcino tourneys weren't as much in the public eye as the Contender of course. Comparable opponents though, hell even Sergio acknowledges as much (he'd have to I guess since one of em beat Vera and one... didn't... twice.).

Always had a soft spot for Mora cause I got hooked on that original contender series. I remember travelling 6 hours to Cardiff in the hope Manfredo upset Calzaghe.

Anyway... Mora was decent but there’s no way he beats a guy like Jacobs, Derevyanchenko etc. I doubt he even beats guys like Geale, Murray and Lemieux at 160 tbh.

I'm a Golovkin fan, not a FANBOY. Everyone in NSB knows that. I'm aware of how bad his fanboys are but his detractors are just as bad. I've ripped Golovkin at times and I can prove it.

Mora's claim to fame is going life and death with Peter "Mortadella Sandwich Breath" Manfredo twice. That's it. In order to beat Golovkin, you need either a really hard punch or superior boxing ability or both. Mora has neither of those. He's not that good and he doesn't have much power. We all know that prime for prime, Mora would've gotten sodomized. And if the fight happened, his detractors would've used it against Golovkin.


The middleweight division was lousy for a while and Golovkin had to take on some weak opposition. Beating the dog shit out of Mora would've done nothing more for his legacy than the other overmatched opponents Golovkin faced. Why didn't the fight happen? I don't know. But if you think that he was afraid of Mora then you're as delusional as he is.

EDIT: In case you planned on arguing "Willie Monroe Jr doe!"... I'm not saying that Willie was any better than Mora, I'm saying is that they're more or less the same level of opposition. Nobody on Golovkins's team ever said that Monroe was a bigger draw than Lara, Scrappy. Less you got a quote somewhere and prove me wrong.

They said Lara wasn't on HBOs approved list (presumably cos of the HBO / SHO cold war) and that he'd need to make himself more relevent to get on it. No-one said that Monroe was a bigger draw, however it was an easier (Monroe being with Banner)- and much cheaper - fight to make. Would Erislandy have fought GGG for $100K you reckon when he could get $1 mil for fighting Delvin R?
