I can remember vividly someone said to me in the 90s, “it’s too hard to follow boxing, it’s only on cable and I don’t buy ppv.” That turned out to be the sentiment of the entire problem as you said. Young kids from the hood, the barrio, and steel mill towns and trailer parks no longer grew up watching boxers and therefore didn’t go to boxing gyms themselves. HBO, Showtime, Don King, Bob Arum, the Duvas, etc all share a measure of responsibility because of greed as you said

All those networks and promoters also started over paying fighters, look at the bulk of JOnes career, yes he was a great talent but he didnt have big fights, but got paid big fight money. Mayweather was the same, the next Leonard by HBO but it took till 2007 for him to become a mainstream star...or as mainstream as it gets now but even then, his salary skewed boxing economics.

So much so, that by the time he had his clash with Pacquiao in 2015, it essentially tanked the HBO ppv model. Showtime seems to be disappointed with boxing too going off of their comments. As more networks drop boxing, as it becomes more and more PPV based on finds its way onto obscure streaming services, the less people get to view it.
