  • Comments Thread For: Thurman: Boxing Without The People Takes Away A Certain Dynamic

As frustrating as it's been for Keith Thurman to not fight as often as he'd like, the thought of performing on a largely empty studio lot won't get him back in the ring any sooner. With all sports and most form of entertainment on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, networks and leagues are attempting to find creative ways to reintroduce such mediums to the masses. Rumors continue to swirl of boxing executives exploring the possibility of in-studio shows without fans in attendance, in best efforts to comply with CDC (Center for Disease Control) regulations while being able to resume a somewhat healthy schedule.

Boxing isn’t wwe....the crowd wills the fighters. Great matches always have great fan presence. It’s apart of the overall experience. Of course I’d watch fights that were on network tv...ie ESPN, fox, fox sports, and showtime/ESPN+ because I have the apps....but I wouldn’t be intersted in any ppv attempts until normalcy

Thurman is right. People will still watch of course, maybe even higher ratings, but the crowd element will take away some excitement. They'll have to really dress up the production, let's see what UFC does.

Like it or not there will not be mass gatherings like people used to have for a long time to come.

Better prepare for the idea of fighting in a studio. Millions of fans all over the world would gladly watch it on tv or internet in the safety and comfort of their homes.

Of course, you still need an ample number of people to prepare fights in a studio, but at least it's more manageable in terms of testing, taking precautions, social distancing, etc.

I agree...it's not even as interesting or dramatic watching on TV without the crowds.

Watch it with a living room full of people when you have money on it and you won’t even realize the place is empty. I had money saying Porkchop was going to get marked up on his last Shobox fight, which he was. Forgot about the audience completely.

Stallone said he saw his first boxing fight after he actually made Rocky. He said his biggest mistake in the fight scenes was that he did not understand the crowd was such a big part of the fight.
